I talked to a guy about a used Yanmar 28HP tractor with a powershift trans that he claims is the same thing as a JD 750. He said it's about 11 years old. He told me that Yanmar used to make all of the JD compacts until about 3 years ago. Is that true? Does anyone have any experience with a powershift trans? The guy selling this Yanmar says it has a 4 speed manual trans and a 3 speed automatic. He says you can shift up and down, stop, go into reverse, etc with the automatic without having to use the clutch. Are they reliable?

Danny, do a search on Yanmar both here and on tractorbynet.com board. The answers to your questions were addressed in detail around Nov-Dec last year on one of these boards. I don't trust my memory on the details, but yes, Yanmar definitely made JD compacts, and still makes the 4100 and 790. There are several members of this board who know alot about the subject, like Roger Loving. ....

Danny, see my reply under the JD section, I have a 2310D, it's 23 PTO HP and 26.5 engine HP, I've found this to be a great little tractor, I've never had any problems with it whatsoever and I love the powershift ....

Please re-answer if your answer is missing from this thread. I was getting email notification whenever a response was posted. I didn't know it, but when I deleted my email notification without reading it, it deleted the thread on this board! I was just deleting them without reading them, thinking I could just go to the thread and read them there, but they weren't there. I don't know how this is happening, but if you left an answer, please re-do it because I didn't get a chance to read it. Thanks.

The transmission is not really automatic and manual. Here is how the powershift on my Yanmar 2620D works. You use the clutch when you select the range,Creeper- 1-2-3-4. Then when you have selcected the range you then shift the other selector to R-1-2-3 without having to use the clutch. Or you may use the clutch to slowly start or stop. It will not shift like an automatic transmission. Think of it as an automatic clutch like on an ATV. Mine has been very reliable. As for being a crossover to JD 750, no it is not. The engine may be the same, I would have to look. JD has never used any of the Yanmar tranmissions like the powershift in their compacts. As for Green Yanmars and red ones. The pale green ones are older models. Unless of course the dealer has painted it JD green. ....

Danny, Yanmar made lime-green tractors up until about 1978....then they went to the red and cream color. These were sold in the US till about 1990. Yes, All of the JD compacts numbering between 650 and 1090 plus the 1250, the 1450, the 1650, and the newer 4100 are made entirely by Yanmar. At least that's the story as best any of us model/history fuys can figure it. Larger 4000 series JDs still use the Yanmar engine complete. Who knows about the rest of the tractor?...Yanmar did not make the front axle that JD is currently replacing on the 4000 series. I believe that one was a US made front axle.
Are Yanmars reliable? Well, they are exactly as reliable as a similar sized JD :-). The powershift transmission was not included in the tractors that Yanmar made for JD. It is an expensive and fairly unique transmission. The story at the time was that Yanmar wanted to retain exclusive rights to it. Again, who knows where the truth is? JD does use a similar tranny on their large Ag tractors. The powershift doesn't seem to have any built-in problems, but it is a complex device. Yanmar has been making it now for 20 years and I haven't heard of problems with it. For many years you could buy the Yanmar with or without the powershift tranny, powershift was an add-on extra.
The thing about Yanmars is that they are a grey market tractor. There are factory-recognized Yanmar dealers in this country but they are in an odd position. They sell parts and do repairs and sell accessories - but they don't sell tractors! So if you want a Yanmar, you have to buy a used one. Up until recently this wasn't such a bad deal. A used Yanmar was more or less the same as the newer tractors. Much like a used JD but less expensive. But recently the newer ones have gotten much better. New Yanmars would probably be competitive. But like I say, you can't buy one. Until you can, the Yanmar is going to remain an outsider. One last question always pops up: If Yanmar made both Yanmar and JD, do Yanmar and JD parts interchange? The answer is: Some do; most don't.
