I talked to a guy about a used Yanmar 28HP tractor with a powershift trans that he claims is the same thing as a JD 750. He said it's about 11 years old. He told me that Yanmar used to make all of the JD compacts until about 3 years ago. Is that true? Does anyone have any experience with a powershift trans? The guy selling this Yanmar says it has a 4 speed manual trans and a 3 speed automatic. He says you can shift up and down, stop, go into reverse, etc with the automatic without having to use the clutch. Did JD have these on their compacts? Are they reliable?

I have a yanmar 2310D that has powershift, I love it. It has 4 speed ranges and 3 forward and 1 reverse for each speed range. The powershift allows shifting between the 3 forward and reverse without clutching. I rarely use the clucth. Shifting is nice and smooth with the powershift. I only see one drawback with the powershift, that is, you must be careful because it can be put into gear very easily if you mistakenly hit the powershifter when getting on or off the tractor. It takes a little getting used to, but I wouldn't have a tractor without it now. ....

Thanks for the info. Does it maintain a constant speed going up and down hills? (some hydrostats will speed up a little going down and slow down a little going up). What is the gross HP and PTO HP of a 2310D (is the D for Diesel?). Will it handle a 5' bush hog? Thanks again. ....

Please re-answer if your answer is missing from this thread. I was getting email notification whenever a response was posted. I didn't know it, but when I deleted my email notification without reading it, it deleted the thread on this board! I was just deleting them without reading them, thinking I could just go to the thread and read them there, but they weren't there. I don't know how this is happening, but if you left an answer, please re-do it because I didn't get a chance to read it. Thanks.

The PTO HP for the 2310D is 23 and the engine HP is 26.5. It maintains a constant speed when going up or down hill, it's not a hydro, it just uses hydraulic clucthes to do the shifting. The D means it's 4 wheel drive. I grew up on Kubota's and the 2310D is my first yanmar, I think I prefer the yanmar so far. ....

Danny, forgot your question regarding the 5' bushog, my tractor handles 5' implements with ease, but remember the 4 wheel drive adds weight to the front end, however, I'm sure the 2310 would handle the 5' bushog easily. ....

Danny, the Yanmar that your guy was referring to must have been a bigger unit than the JD 750. I own a '81 JD 750 and it is a 3cyl machine with a Yanmar diesel engine rated at 21hp, producing 17hp at the pto. The JD 850 is rated at about 25 engine hp. Yanmar does make most all the engines for the JD tractors that are 30hp and under. Not sure if they made the whole tractor though. There are others in this group who could tell you that for sure.

Later...
Keith ....
