I just bought a 790 and sold my two JD 650's. The rear PTO was not live and would stop when the tractor stopped moving on the 650's. The front PTO was electric like on a lawn mower and would keep the belly mower running when stopped. I have purchased a 790 off e-bay and will have it by this weekend. It has the belly mower. Can anyone confirm that the mid-PTO is live and will keep running when the tractor stops? This tractor is an early 790 and is 4WD. The only thing I can find is from 2005 saying live is standard on the 790 but ONLY with 4wd. I hope I didn't goof up.

I read them but it doesn't tell me. It says it can be either transmission driven or live with a dual stage clutch (like on my 820 and 2040). Just wondering if anyone knew especially on the mid PTO. I seriously doubt JD would take a step backwards from a mid 80's 650.
Thanks for the links. ....

I had a 670 and it had a two stage clutch. I think the 790 is the same. When you let the clutch out just a little the pto starts. The 670 was one of the best tractors i ever owned. I kept it ten years and sold it for 1200.00 less that i paid for it. Well i traded but still got a good price for it even on trade. ....

The 670 was the same size as my 650's but with an extra cylinder. I hope you're right about the 790. I'll know by this weekend. I'll post the answer as soon as I try it. ....

mine is a 2002 and page 24 in my owners manual claims that the tractor may be equipped with either a single stage or a dual stage clutch both mid pto and the rear are live , well at least it is on my tractor, some where in my literature the 4wd is listed to have the dual stage clutch.found it JOHN DEERE'S "GROUNDS CARE EQUIPMENT PURCHASING GUIDE" PAGE 2 "790 4WD TRACTORS HAVE CONTINUOUS LIVE PTO OPERATION AS OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT." IT'S A PART OF THE 4WD OPTION. ....

Woo, hoo. I got the 790 and it DOES, in fact, have the live PTO option with dual stage clutch! Whew! Quite a relief. FYI, the literature that I got with it says the 2WD is transmisison-driven and the 4WD is continuous live. ....
