We have several trees to plant. My tractor doesn't have a backhoe and I can't justify the $6000 for one. I was wondering how big a diameter auger (post hole digger) I can run with this tractor. This would seem to be a good way to dig holes for planting trees. A poor mans backhoe.

Alan, your post doesn't mention what tractor you have. I've a JD 4100, one of the smaller ones, with a Bush Hog post hole digger & 12" auger. A few weeks back I drilled over 40 holes for planting bare root trees and it worked fine. Of course the ground is still soft from winter rains, and most of the trees were fairly small. I'd have trouble doing this in the August as my tractor is too light when the soil gets rock hard. I think it would handle a larger auger with soft soil. Best of luck. JonB ....

I should have mentioned that I have a Kubota B2710HST. It is 27 gross HP, about 20 PTO HP. ....

The vast majority of tree roots go laterally. As you get into transplanting bigger trees there are augers that are short and wide. They're cone shaped, about 2' diameter at the top and taper to a point about 2' deep. There are even bigger ones. An ideal planting hole would be an initial 6 or 9" diameter 3' hole, put some polyacrylamide in the bottom of the "pilot" hole ,then use the 2'x 2' tapere dauger described above. Polyacrylamide is a material that looks like coarse salt that absorbs 600x it's weight in water, a drought insurance. "Terra-sorb" is one brand. County reforestation progams sell it at a more reasonable price. Don't get over zealous,too much will push a tree up like a whitehead in a pimple--1 to 2 tablespoons mixed in the "pilot" hole dirt is plenty.
Something to consider is an inch and a fourth sump pump hose that is perforated buried 7 or 8 inches around the perimeter of the root for easy and effecient watering .I use a plastic bag to "cork" the hose.This also brings air to the roots.This is especially handy if you have to carry water to the tree.Cut a 3 or 4 foot square section of pressed polyester landscape fabric over the returned dirt and cover with mulch. Avoid fertilizer except for fishmeal or small time released tablets.Many trees,newly transplanted,are killed by too much soluoble nitrogen. ....

great tool, i have planted 300 trees and about 40 rose bushes with mine , i have a worksaver brand and a 12" auger,digs like crazy, i had to purchase a new set of teeth as wore the first set out, the people at worksaver were easy to deal with.
you can screw it into the ground so make sure to lift the auger when you are about 2 feet into the hole.
i have a NH 1520 with 19 pto hp runs the digger easily in the worst soil , heavy clay with lots of rock, glacial till. i keep a heavy pry bar handy to break up the occasional large rock that stops the drilling. great tool, i have planted 100 trees in three hours alone.
the post hole digger is considered the most dangerous of the 3 pt attachments, never let anyone within 25 feet of the unit while operating it. this thing can throw a very large rock a very long distance. never operate this implement from any where but the drivers seat and do not dismount unless the tractor motor is off.
