I just started having a PTO problem with my M5400. For the last two days we have been mulching with a 5' Pak Flail and by mid day today it started slowing down ( PTO) like the clutch was slipping, the engine RPM did not slow down. This tractor has a hydrallic valve on off system, no clutch for the PTO. Does anyone have an idea what might the problem be.
Thanks and Aloha,

You don't give to much to help from but it does sound like the pto isn't working right. How many hours on the tractor and how many of them on the flail? ....

Have you watched both ends of the drive shaft, with in a safe distance of coarse, to see if both ends are tuning the same speed. You might have a slip clutch going out at the end of the shaft at the gear box. Look for any discoloration or anything that looks like its been hot, if not need to have the tractor checked out. ....

Yes the PTO shaft is spinning the same speed at both ends, what is happing is that the shaft slows down with the flail while the engine does not seem to labour, kind of like a clutch is slipping. Do you know if this modle has a clutch in the PTO system or is it 100% hydralic?
Thanks. ....
