I am about to purchase a JD 4100, however due to budget restraints I am debating between Gear or Hydra. I have been using the hydra on a 345. Will I be happy if I end up with a gear?, will I get used to it?, or will I always wish I forked out the extra $1500.00?

Craig; You will always wish you had got the Hydro. I have a JD 755 which the 4100 took the place of, it is Hydro and I love it. Its great for loader work and mowing both finish and rotory. You don't have to stop, cluch and change gears to get in and around bushes, trees etc. Well, you know you have hydro on the smaller machine. Also I'm disabled and can't use my left leg much, if it wasn't for hydro I couldn't use a tractor. So I guess it means more to me than the average tractor user.David ....

You did not mention whether you were also getting a front end loader. If you are, I do not believe you will be pleased with the gear. I bought a 4200 with the loader and had them come and pick it up after a weekend's use and order me the same tractor with hydro. I have not regretted doing so and would be regretting it if I had kept the collar shift. I really like the hydro despite its additional cost. ....

I have the 4100 in the hydro version also. I am in the same boat, wasn't crazy about the higher price but figure with luck I will have the machine for 15 and maybe 20 years. I had a JD316 in hydro also. It also depends on what your primary use will be. If mowing in some tight areas with lots of trees like me, and lots of gear changing would have to be done, hydro will sure be the way to go. I have no regrets with the tractor, great machine. ....

I have a 4100 with hydro, and can't imagine working with out it. Mowing around trees, loader work, etc. are far easier. Get the hydro, it is well worth the extra money! ....

I bought a 4100 gear model with loader in December. I also had the gear/hydrodebate. I opted for a gear model after a test drive. I found it real easy toshift from reverse to low to high, and in between 1 and 2, 3 and 4. I have usedthe loader quite a bit and have no complaints. It is my opinion (and I might becrazy or ignorant) but my feeling is that a gear transmission is a better long term option. You may have to replace a clutch, but that is going to happen. A hydro is based on pressure, and with wear, you always lose pressure. Another thing to consider, I have had people tell me that a hydro will "lurch"foward (actually you lurch forward and push the pedal more)when driving into a pile. But that seems like something you would get used to.Take a test drive at a dealer before you decide, and look at the placement ofthe differential lock pedal, can you use it while driving? ....

I tend to agree with you about the gear being best in the long term, but a John Deere dealer told me recently the cost to replace a clutch in a John Deere compact was $1,500 (the clutch pack alone costs $1,200). Has anyone else had any experience with a clutch replacement of this type? ....
