Mr. Bird Senter, Can your farmer neighbor's 150 HP John Deeres push down implements which are attached to 3-point hydraulics while tilling ? In an earlier thread Roger loving said that in compact tractors it is a matter of simple physics that if the tractor pushes implements down enough then rear tires shall rise resutling in loss of traction as compact tractors are not heavy. But I think that 150-HP John Deeres must be heavy enough to have this great feature. My 55-HP Belarus has this advantage, which sometimes is really usefull if it becomes stuck in mud then one can jack it up and put anything e.g. pieces of wood or dry soil under its rear tires to free it instead of getting another tractor to tow it out.Nuclear_Weapon7.Hyderabad,Sindh,PAKISTAN.

Nuclear_Weapon7, No, his big John Deeres do not have that feature, although I've heard that it is at least an option on some John Deere (don't know that to be a fact). I'm not even sure this neighbor uses any 3-pt equipment except a hay spear. His primary business is hay, and when he's moving those round bales of hay, he uses a 3-pt hay spear on the rear, as well as a hay spear on the front end loaders to move 2 bales at a time. But his plows, planters (drill), brush hog, hay cutters, baler, etc. are all big pull type instead of 3-pt. Naturally a 3-pt that would exert downward pressure could decrease traction for the rear wheels in some cases, but I think it would be a very good option to have for such things as downward pressure on a post hole digger, as well as the use you mentioned. ....

down pressure on 3-point is rare on any farm tractors, the implaments are normally heavy enough to stick'em in the ground! I only know of 2 tractors that have power down in my area, 1100 massy-560 HI with fast hitch. Just thought you would like to know. ....

Thanks Bird and Dana for the replies. Yes, Dana I liked to know that at least some tractor besides Belarus had that feature. No, Dana I dont think that implements are normally heavy enough for them not to require down pressure. With 4-WD, down pressure is a feature that is on my wish list for the ideal tractor.

Classic International Harvester tractors like the IH 400 had down pressure on the "fast hitch". Better yet, they had both tilt and down pressure on the hitch. We used to use the hitch plate to "dig" rocks out of the fields: if you could get purchase for that hitch plate under a lip or surface of a rock, you could push, tilt, and lift some amazingly large stones up to where you could then push them around with the loader. ....

Nuclear_Weapon7, I still think the ability to apply down pressure on the 3-pt is a good idea, but Dana is right; such farm tractors are pretty rare, and with the implements most of the big farmers use in this area, he's right about the weight. The neighbor I was talking about only uses a 14' brush hog, and 12' hay cutters, but his plows and drill are 20' and you can bet they're heavy. And compared to a lot the farmers in the area, this guy has small equipment. ....
