I am looking at buying a JD 790, 4 wheel drive, with R4 tires on it. I will be using a 6 foot brush hog, and a 5 foot finish mower, to mow 8 acres of land. I will use the finish mower on the first 2 acres, and the brush hog on the back pasture. I will also be doing some other mowing jobs for extra work. I will eventually put a front end loader on, to due some dirt work. Would this be the right tractor to buy ? I chose this tractor because I feel that 30 HP would be a good match, but also due to the price ( fits my budget ). Any help would be appreciated.

That’s about the setup I have.

If you can, get the FEL now so it can be rolled up into the purchase price.

If you go without the loader you'll want to be sure to fully load the front weight bracket. The front end is very light.

Finish mower size, I have the 72 inch; the tractor has plenty of power for it and covers your tire tracks well. Go with the bigger if you can.

I have the LX5 rough cut mower.
Nice... At first I wasn’t so happy about it "only" being 5 feet. I was clearing inches thick brush and very thick roses. If I had the 6’ it would have bogged it down a bit too much I think. If you plan on never getting into any thing that thick you should be fine with the 6' rough cut.

If you live any where it gets below -5 you should have the dealer install a block heater. I did my after the fact and it was in a bad place to get to, but I bought mine at NAPA for $34, instead of the dealers $90.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the advise. The dealer quoted me for the LX5 rough cut mower. My land is in good shape (grass not to high, and the back pasture is not in bad shape), but I will be cutting others land for extra cash. I do not know what type of condition theirs will be in. I would like to get the front end loader now, but a little tough on the monthly payments. The dealer did quote the tractor with the hydrolic box already attatched to the tractor. He said that it would save money in the long run. I was also told that the 790 was very easy to work on.
Thanks again. ....
