Are you using a generic switch for cars etc? If so, it won't work, unless you want a separate switch for the glow plugs, assuming your glow plugs are energized by the key being turned backward.
I use a Kubota ignition switch, but any ignition switch from a diesel with glow plugs might work.
I found the following info on the internet, but it is old. Might help on finding other parts.
Sorry, they wouldn't let me post them. Try googling Mitsubishi 1600 to find it at Tractor Point.

Does it have any markings?
OF the 5 wires, one comes FROM the battery and is hot all the time. One goes to the starter solenoid. One goes to the preheater/preheater solenoid. One feeds the electrical system of the tractor. The other MIGHT be to the lighting system or the lighting system might feed off the tractor's electrical system wire. I'll have to go find the list I made for the Kubota switch I just put on the Ford 1600. ....

Hi!
My Mitsu D1600 II has very good tires, a new clutch, a recently serviced starter, exhaust routed under foot rest, sheet metal somewhat rusty but sound, custom made debris screen in front of radiator, custom SS grill plate in front. Lift works well. One stabilizer has been replaced by a heavy chain, which works fine.
This is a strong tractor, always does what I want it to.
It needs a starter solenoid now, and I have been unable to find one, so I am forced to sell it as is, or part it out.
Need any parts? Let me know!
thanks.

Before you sell it, does the old starter have a part number on it? I just googled Mitsubishi 1600 starter and found out that many Kubotas use Mitsubishi starters. I know that some of the name brand companies used Mitsubishi tractors for their brand.
Case-IH comes to mind with their 235, 245, and 255 tractors.
I'm pretty sure Massey Ferguson did, too. I would start checking engine sizes for those two companies and see if you can't match it that way. Or......what happened to rewinding it?
Is the starter bad or the solenoid? ....

Just REread your post. Bad solenoid. Now....what exactly does the solenoid do or not do?
Does it kick the starter gear but not turn the starter. Does it do nothing at all. ....

With the starter spinning, but gear not engaging, I would suspect solenoid, also. I would listen to see if the solenoid tries to kick the gear out. It might be as simple as lubricating the solenoid slide out sleeve. To do that you'd need to pull the solenoid and then pull the rod out and lub it with a very light grease or even just WD-40 for a quick check to see if that fixes it.
the other information I got by simply "Googling" the items. IH and then Case-IH used Mitsubishi tractors for their 234/235/244/245/255/and later models. Cub Cadet tractors (not lawn and garden) are Mitsubishis, also. I believe all the above are 3 cylinder engines. Yours is a 2 cylinder.
If you "google" Mitsubishi D1600 databook you will come up with the specs for the tractor, but they are very limited because of lack of volume. If you "google" IH 234 databook, you'll get the specs for that.
Not sure I've answered all your questions. I have yet to find the part number for your starter. I do know that Kubota uses a lot of Mitsubishi starters, as well as the little IH/Case-IH and Cub Cadet tractors. You will have to examine your solenoid and compare to one of those, if you won't/can't be freed up. I'd try to free up the internals of the solenoid. Does it stay outside or inside a shed? ....

I have had the solenoid apart, and it is free. I did purchase a new solenoid from Valley Power in Roanoke. I needed to modify it slightly with a grinder and file to get it to mate up with the starter, but it then worked exactly the same as the old one, namely starter spins but gear does not engage, so I noticed then that the plunger in the new one is longer than the old plunger, which might explain it not engaging. I tried different combinations of springs and plungers and was unable to get it to engage. ....

1. Have you read the information to grimaldojr in 2012? He had the same questions.
2. Does the new switch have the same number of terminals as the old?
3. Do you know/remember which wire went to which terminal on the old switch?
4. If #3 is yes, you could reinstall the old switch and try a small screw driver inserted on the broken key to turn it on/off and use it that way. That is what I'm doing with my little track hoe as it takes non generic switch and is tough to find.
4. As grimaldojr was told, the switch needs to power the starter, the relay to the glow plugs, the alternator, and, maybe, the lights.
5. You mention a metal strip connecting two wires. Does that mean it is connecting bare wire or does it connect two insulated wires?
6. Have you googled Mitsubishi 1600 wiring diagram? ....
