Lots of folks know that the 650 thru 1650 series of John Deere compacts used aYanmar diesel engine, but not so many give Yanmar enough credit for the rest ofthe tractor. I believe that Yanmar built the entire machine....top to bottom and even painted it JD green. The JD/Yanmars are excellent - as everyone agrees. From the ones that I haveseen it would be just about impossible to improve on the quality of construction. But it was not the top of the line Yanmar even for that time. Yanmars under their own name had things like integral power steering and the powershift transmission in the early 1980's. The JD versions never did get these extras. Yanmar's support for the older ones that they imported is still good. Roger L

Darned if I know! I'm not sure that they divide their line into compact vsfull size tractors. Like the US marketing and manufacturing people do. Thetractors just keep getting larger through the range, but have similar features. There is a 35 HP for sale now in Wyoming. A guy in SC was selling a late modelgrey market 40 something HP recently. This Spring I talked on the phone to awell known grey market importer down South who said that he had imported Yanmarsthat were close to 100 HP. The largest compact they made when they were importing to the US was the 336D. I believe the last year was 1989. This was 33 HP 3 cyl. 12 speed forward,4 reverse power shift with creeper gears. Power steering was integral, not anadd on. It had draft and position control on the three point. It had a nice little factory loader with breakout force of 2880 lbs + a 12% reserve. Roger L ....

Roger, according to my local dealer, JD actually owns 51% of Yanmar, so maybe now JD builds Yanmar. Who knows? ....
