Well you guys have all been so helpful with my purchase in my 790, I thought maybe I could get some insight on what to do with the machine now that I own it. I don't really know how to go about making some money with the machine, and for the most part, "landscapers" seem to put my ideas down or just talk me out of getting into the digging business. I make good money at what I do (a carpenter), but I would love to make some "extra" money with my new toy I am so proud of. I love working with machines, I even worked for an excavator for a while, didn't work out too well working for someone under too much stress.Anyway, I am willing and wanting to purchase a backhoe for it (hang in there tractorman, I haven't given up hope yet), but I was wondering if any of you guys use your compacts for doing small excavation work, or whatever, to help pay for the machine. For that matter anyone in Northern NJ looking for a man and machine for hire???? LOL.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I live in a small town. I do alot of garden-plowing,tilling,dirt removal,hual dirt in & landscaping as well as grass seeding ect. I've even dug footings for a house addition, I even dug my basement right next to my house 20 x 20 plus the overdig! Yes your new toy can do alot of small work that a garden tractor can't do. A big tractor is to big in some cases. My 755 makes me alot of extra cash per year & I havent menchioned snow removal (when & if it snows)

You cant do much with just your tractor,you need the implements.I have a small caretaking,handyman type business.This year i decided to by a tractor.I ended up getting one of those cheap chinese mahcines,(ok give me your best shot guys),so i could spend more of my not so unlimited funds on implements(loaded,chipper,mower,post hole digger.)and i still plan to get more.The trouble is,if your only doing this on the side it may take a long time to recupe the cost of new toys,but what the heck,it's nice to have them around the house any way ....

Making extra money is great, but remember one important thing, LIABILITY, when you buy a backhoe just remember to call Diggers Hot Line or who ever it is in your area, because when you cut just one fiber optic cable it's going to cost you alot more then that 790 did!! Insurance is the only answer, and by the time you pay for that, it takes the fun out of it!!!!That's why contractors charge so much. Don't get me wrong I've got all the toys for my NH TC25D but I'm very careful who and where I work! ....

Jerry - I think you're right about the liability issue. I know a few landscapers and they all bemoan the "renegades" out there doing this kind of work without insurance. One accident is all it takes to possibly wipe out a lifetime of savings or assets. I just got a 4100 w/loader and before I do any "work" for anyone else, I'm gonna put out the appx. $500/yr it takes to be insured. My own thoughts on making a little spare change with the tractor is do offer services of spreading materials, especially since in my area, use of various types of mulch has skyrocketed. Several people have told me that turning over gardens is a popular task, although of course limited to a very narrow timeframe in the spring. And an earlier poster (sorry, forgot the name) mentioned the need for lots of attachments - absolutely true. Maybe some more experienced guys could suggest some of the more popular implements called for in the "general landscaping" type of business. ....

I have a relative who does plumbing and heating in South Jersey. A booming business for him has been running gas lines for pool heaters. Down in South Jersey the soil is sandy and has no rocks to speak of, so he bought a trencher
that rips right into the ground with no problem. On a few occasions he has tried to do jobs where you are, in North Jersey. As I'm sure you know, the digging is a diferent story up there. After almost ruining his trencher he has vowed never to contract jobs in the Northern half of the state again. It seems to me that if you contacted some plumbing and heating houses in your area they could probably use a guy with a backhoe. ....

Hmmm, some good thoughts. I called for insurance, and one guy told me something like 3,300.00 for 300,000.00 libility a year. But, this was for excavating (digging into the earth). I would guess you guys doing lawn mowing, or tilling/soil spreading, can't be paying 3k + for insurance. So, I guess the trick here is to use my contracting business, and it's insurance, and tell the agent I have "A JOB" that requires some digging with a rental machine, bet the additional insurance would be a lot cheaper, and I am sure all these Landscapers are not paying that kind of money.
As far as implements, I have a sub soiler that works great (even in rocky soil) for shallow trenching (cable wire/pvc pipe for irrigation). Have a rake, and would hope to get a backhoe as soon as I get some cash for that. Anyway. Keep the ideas coming.
