Hello,I have a problem mowing with a woods rm500 (rear mounted mower). I haven't been able to mow as regularly as I would like, so the grass has been getting 8-10 inches tall. When I mow, the tractor tires smash down the grass, and it doesn't come back up in time for the mower to cut it. So I have stripes of long grass all over the lawn. I think I have seen this discussed some time ago, but I couldn't find the post. Any ideas how to fix this?thanks

I presume we're talking about a finish mower here. You might try some new blades with the back side angled upward more for sucking the grass up into the mower. I forget what you call them. Bottom line is that you need more uplift from your blade action. ....

I had the same problem with a landpride 2572. Heres my thoughts and experience, A land pride has several different pin holes for the bottom pins. if your mower has this option move them to the last hole, this will get the mower alittle furture away from your tractor so the grasswill stand up for a better cut.
High lift blades are also very helpful.
Cutting grass 8" tall does require to mow it twice to get a good cut unless you drive slow.
If all else fails mow in reverse (works good in tall stuff for me).

I'm not a master at lawns but let me give you some ideas. You never should cut over 1/3 the height of the grass at once. Give it two days and hit it again. You can kill off much of the grass by cutting too much. Many decks can not handle the volume of grss you are cutting. If you where to be going slower the deck might be able to raise the grass bent over by the tires. ....

Thanks very much for the replies. I suppose that now is a good time to admit that I mow in 2-high, which is about 5.5mph. I was impressed that the mower was able to cut quite well at that speed except for the tire tracks. I believe that I need to slow down and mow more often, but it's hard to bring myself to add 1.5 hours to my mowing time (5 acres). I guess I should have bought a smaller place. ....

In addition to Art's comments, make sure to keep the underside of your mower deck cleaned. If there is a bunch of clippings matted to the deck, it reduces the lift from the blades and it keeps the grass from having space to stand. This will compound your compression problem. ....
