I am considering a JD4300 HST, four wheel drive. I've seen references in the message boards to 'MFWD'. What does that mean? I have also seen references to problems with the front ends of the 4000 series of JD. What is that about? I appreciate your help with this.Thanks.

MFWD stands for Mechanical Four Wheel Drive....I am not particularly sure what non-mechanical four wheel drive might be except maybe independent hydraulic motor four wheel drive like you might find on an industrial loader.

About 30 yrs. ago the initial foray into 4 wheel-drive farm tractors was with"front wheel hydraulic assist".When the going got tough, say with a plow, the front-wheel assist would peter out as you would try to raise the plow to lighten the load. Of course this was exactly when you needed all 4 wheels working for you the most. Mechanical front wheel drive (MFWD) was introduced to get around that short coming. I would be interested if there were also longevity/reliability issue. ....
