I have been looking at fwd jd 4300 tractors. I am considering the synchro reverse option because it saved almost $1500 off the hydro. However, after reading some of the discussions over the last 6-8 months, I'm getting nervous about spending all this money on what may be an model that does not have all the bugs shaken out. I came across a fwd 1997 jd 870 model and loader with just 75 hours, though the dealer wants $16,700 which seems high. I'm not familiar with the 870's reputation. I would appreciate any comments on whether I should be giving the 870 serious consideration over the 4300. One of the uses for the tractor will be with a winch to haul out logs. Thanks, Jim.

Jim,
The 870 does not have the working room that the 870 has so if your going to be on the tractor for any period of time you will be much happier with the 4300. Getting onand off the tractor is also much easier with the 4300. Another thing is look into the attachments that you can put on the 4300 vs the 870. Three point hitch is rated at 2200# lift capacity 24" behind link ends. The only other thing I see is the horse power differance, 28 vs 32 and 25pto vs 27pto. Good luck with your choice, I've been looking at a 4400 and my friend has a 870 but I'm no expert but I hope some things I noticed helped. ....
