I have a new JD #7 backhoe mounted on a 755 w/ 700 hours. I don't have any experience with a back hoe, except the 20 hours I've put on this one, and I have a question. After I park my tractor, the boom will leak down so the bucket is on the ground within the hour. Is this normal? It seems a little quick to me. Would this affect my digging power? While the machince isn't a power house by any means, I've been satisified with it so far, but I've recently begun to think maybe I'm being short changed by a hydraulic problem I don't know about. Comments? Thanks.

Most backhoes do this, although you could make the argument that they shouldn't. The seepage past the valves and/or seals is so slow that I don't think that this will affect the power at all. ....

I asked my mechanic a similar question last week, and he told me that the "new" spec was 1/4" movement on the cylinder every minute. It the cylinder rod travel was less than 1/4" per minute the unit was within spec for new. For used, he indicated that about double that would still not affect operation.
However, if there is any visible leakage from the cylinder around the rod, he recommended repacking that immediately.

Thanks for your response. I guess I'm okay then. I don't lack power, I just see alot of full size backhoes that never seem to drop a bucket and mine hits the ground overnight. Ah, well. If I put it on the ground start I never notice it. ....

Jeff - I have a #7 hoe that also leaks down. I always keep the boom pin in when I'm not using it, which prevents it from leaking down.
