I am still looking for thoughts and advice on the purchase of a new 4000 series JD. I have read several threads concerning scuffing and other problems on the 4300. Here is my question: I can purchase a 4300 4WD HST from my dealer: he took delivery of the tractor last August (bad axle serial number...I checked already). He says he will replace the axle under the recent JD PIP. But, I am concerned that there may be other issues that would exist on a tractor built last summer. Am I better off having the dealer order a new tractor or am I being paranoid here? I am looking at a 430 loader and pallet forks that have to be ordered anyway, so the wait is really not an issue for me that much. Any thoughts and comments concerning other problems/issues common to 4300's built in that time frame would be appreciated.

Chris, unless the stock 4300 is considerably less expensive than an order tractor, I suggest you order your new tractor. There have been a few postings on this board concerning the changes in the new production tractors. Of course, the new MFWD axle being the most important. One of the previous postings suggests that Deere has made some changes in the hydro to reduce the pedal stiffness and jerky operation that we have complained about. My dealer tells me that the replacement axle for the existing 4000 tractors will not be available until April or May. I would not be surprised if that date isn't pushed back even further. Additionally, this assumes Deere is going to warranty the axle for everyone who complains. At this point, I am not sure anyone knows where this will end up. In my opinion, unless you need the tractor immediately, you will have fewer headaches with the new production tractor. ....

I just had to make same type of decision on purchase of JD 4400 HST with 430 loader and 48 backhoe. In order to take advantage of 1 year 0% financing I had to close deal by 2/25/2000. Dealer had several 4x00 in stock (4-4200, 2-4300, 1-4400) but I specifically opted to have him order new machine from factory and specified "New MFWD axle" on my invoice. Felt is was better to be safe than sorry, I will be selling out my 1/2 of a 1987 JD 970 TLB to my brother which we have had since almost new (a great machine) and can afford to wait the 4-6 weeks for a new machine (I hope he is right on the lead time). Although my 4 acre lot is somewhat hilly and woods, I also have to use machine while crossing much turf and have ordered the 4400 with turf tires, hope they tread lighter than the r-1 ags on my 970...Good luck!
