Just got a fax from my dealer, fax reads the new style 4 wheel drive front axle uses a standard double-acting clinder with a solid tie rod located behind the axle. to facilitate this design, a larger steering pump and steering valve is required to provide enough flow for efficient sterring. These axle are to be out with in the next couple of weeks.

Just talked to my JD dealer about the new axel.He said the only way JD was
going to change it was if you had bought a belly mower with the tractor.I
bought a 4300 with loader and I don't qualify.I wanted to clear the brush
off to plant grass and get the mower later. After paying the same amount for
the tractor(which the axle is on) as others it don't seem right. Also, the
rear end has broken twice already.Once at 25 hours and once at 50 hrs.I
haven't had a chance to test it yet but I will.
This is the second tractor I bought from this dealer.I got a 770 with
loader a few years ago and have never had to take it back.I'll let you know
how it works out.Ken

Could you please send me a copy of the fax? I have a 4200 with a belly mower on order and want to get the dealer's assurance that the problem will be fixed. Drop me an email and I'll get you the number. ....

Ken the fax does say that the steering geometry of oldstyle 4-wheel drive front axle had a steering angle that in certain mid-mount mowing applications could cause turf scuffing. But I would still want the new axle even if I didn't have a belly mower, because of resale value. You may sale your machine down the road and the person bying it may want A belly mower, or you yourself may want one oneday. I would raise these questions to your dealer. ....

Terry my 4300 is just now 5 months old.I'm not sure that means an older
mod. Also according to the older posts -- it has nothing to do with a
mowing deck. The tractor scuffs anyway. However I will discuss this with
my dealer as you sugest.I would like to have that front axel. Thanks Ken ....

Terry I would not jump for joy just yet. Yesterday I attended the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville KY. The John Deere Rep I talked with said that the only tractors that would be repaired were the one sold with turf tires. I guess they think that the people that got R1s & R4s will never drive on anything but plowed ground. I think that these are the tractors that should be repaired first as they do alot more damage to turf than the ones with turf tires. Before I purchased my 4400 with R4s I ask about the scuffing problem and was told that JD knew about the problem and it would be repaired. I now find that the word of the dealer means nothing & that JOHN DEERE does not have a problem with sticking it to there customers. I am now stuck with a piece of JOHN DEERE GREEN JUNK that I paid to much for because I thought I was buying from a reputable USA company. I am now either going to have spend another $1300.00 for turf tires & rims or sell it at a huge loss to get a tractor that I can drive on sod with out plowing the yard every time I turn.
I should have bought New Holland or Kubota.

Chris my 4400 does have turf tires, but like you I don't see what differents that makes if the tires scruf they scruf and you should get the new axle. Some months back I told my dealer about this problem, he and a dealer rep came to my home and looked at my lawn, they seen first hand how bad the problem was, maybe you should try to have the same thing done at your house. Let us know if you don't get the fix, if not it sure will make me think twice about bying JD equipment next time. Best of luck. ....
