I own a 14 acre tree farm. My old(27 years)reliable Kubota L175 out of no where started poping out of reverse. This machine has been recently rebuilt, and has always been well maintained. I use this machine to mow, grade, and scoop and fill tree spade holes. It will not go in reverse with out "poping" out of gear. Obviusly this has NEVER happended before. Am I screwed? DC Smith

I don't believe the shift linkage on my Ford 1710 is at all adjustable, but maybe some are and I'd check. Fortunately, the shifting rod (on my column linkage) is the most likely place to look if a transmission disengages. Mine has a spring and also a detent groove and ball that can become worn. These repairs, if required, may not be too big a deal, and they are the sort of things that may escape inspection in general rebuild work. ....

You probably have a problem with a shifting fork or rail. It could be as small as a set screw loosening off. ....

When you say "recently rebuilt" does this include any transmission work? I'm particularly interested to know if the cover of the transmission was removed and replaced. This cover is the plate on top of the transmisson where the shifting levers mount. It might have been removed in order to inspect the transmission gears and shafts.
I don't know specifically what the cause is, but these problems are almost always in the shifters and rails - and can be serviced easily by removing that plate as long as it is done before the problem happens too many times. Although transmission gears and shafts can be complex, servicing the shifting is simple and accessible. I don't want to see you lose a reliable tractor for such a simple (probably) thing.
Gears are meshed in a transmission by being forced along the gear shaft by a shifter fork that is pinned to a sliding shifting rail....just as Art said. After meshing, the only thing that prevents the gears from drifting apart is the position of the hand shift lever plus a small spring and ball under the top plate that engages a notch in the shifting rail. All manual transmissions are basically the same. Any foreign car mechanic will feel right at home with this shift mechanism, and that is where I'd start. In fact from the picture I have of the L235 tranny, it looks a lot like a vintage Volvo tranny. One difference is that if your transmission is like the L235 (the only one I have a manual for) I think that spring and ball can jump out of there when the top plate and its gasket is removed. You might want to mention that fact to your mechanic.... :-) ....

Roger is right about the simplicity of the transmission. There was no mention of the transmission being rebuilt so I just [assume] it was the engine and the mechanic would have no reason to be in the transmission. As stated before remove the top cover if you dare or have a mechanic do it that might know what it is supposed to look like. ....
