My manual calls for a filter change every 100 hours. Well, that's an easy place to skimp. I blow out dust in the canister every ten hours, and carefully blow out the filter under low pressure. The filter just never looks bad and I'm usually tempted to skip a replacement. My attitude changed last week. I went to the township dump last week when it was closed because I needed a piece of scrap steel. I knew I'd have to walk around the gate, but I took a few boxes of trash I never remember to toss. An old air filter (changed dutifully at 100 hours) was on top of my usual lazy packed boxes. The filter kept rolling off the box and rolling down a slope. Eventually I stomped on it so it wouldn't roll (it probably would have made more sense to repack the box). Surprise! The insides of the pleats were packed with sand that couldn't be seen before the filter was stomped. Guess I have to remember that loader buckets of sand go up and down right in front of the air intake, and I did dump a bit of sand off the back of the bucket on to the hood before I changed the filter. The amount of sand was surprising though, and I don't think I'll be tempted to stretch a replacement again.

Tom just think, it would only take a thimble full of that sand and less than 10 minutes to ruin your engine. ....

Yep, I was really surprised at the amount of sand and that you couldn't see it until the pleats were pulled apart. Of course, I stomped on the filter and saw the sand just before about 50 raven erupted out of the dump pit and a bear bolted off into the bush so maybe everything seemed more surprising than it actually was. But that's another story, although not a very eventful one. Never the less, the sand was a good illustration why filters should be changed regularly and why care should be taken to not poke holes in them with high-pressure air or damage the rubber seal that seals the filter and intake manifold. ....
