I checked my year-old JD4400 carefully yesterday for any signs of battery corrosion, corrosion on the radiator, etc. I'm happy to report that I could see nothing out of the ordinary. However, I really couldn't determine where the battery was designed to vent, at least when looking at the battery from the front. Can anybody please clarify this for me? Is it a vent tube like on an ATV or is just vent caps?

If a vent and hose isn't obvious, then look for notches along the lower edge of the vent caps. If it vents through the side of the caps, I suppose it's a good idea for the vents to face away from the rad. I imagine most vent caps can be rotated 180-degree. By the same token, I don't think appreciable acid fumes would be expelled through the vent unless the battery boiled. My battery has 800+ cold cranking amps. It would take even a big charger awhile before the battery boiled, and there's little chance unless I ignore the timer recommendations on my charger. ....
