Quick hitches are a verry usefull item on a tractor IF you are going to be changing impliments quite often...as in several times a day, or if you are not capable of moving the impliment a few inches with a board. (I use a 3"x3"x4' stick of oak)The drawback on using a quick hitch is this.
1. all impliment HAVE to be duilt or modified to fit the
quick hitch.
2. The drive shafts (pto driven impliments) may or may not be long enough to be
able to reach the few extra inches required.
There is no doubt about it, A quick hitch is a labor saving device if you are riged up to use it. ....

Sir;
It depends on what you call an "involved process". I do not know what impliments you have. Let me attempt to explane what "set up" means to me. Lets say that you purchase a catagory 1 quick hitch... It is 27" wide and it has a 1 1/2" hook at the top that is 24" above the lift pins. This hook is to catch the tower of an impliment. OK... since your lift arms and top link (of the tractor)is adjustible, the Quick hitch SHOULD hook up to the tractor. So far, so good. Now lets put on a brush hog type mower... OH NO, the lift pins on the mower are 30" wide, the hight of the tower is just fine but the hook is to wide to fit in the tower. No big deal...this is nothing that a cutting torch, welder, and some metal will not fix. After modifying the mower so as it will buckel up to the quick hitch--- you discover that the drive shaft is too short. (remember now, the quick hitch will move the impliment to the rear a few inches) OK,OK,OK, Go buy you another drive shaft, modify the shaft cause you only need 3 more inches, put it on, hook the mower up and presto-changeo, your tractor is unable to pick it up. (remember now, you have moved the impliment to the rear AND added some weight). OK, lets say the tractor pickes it up just fine...HOWEVER since the impliment is moved to the rear, the movement of the impliment is amplified, or greator than it once was. If you are not carefull, you will ruin the drive shaft when you pick it up too high. This process will be repeated over and over with box blades, differant mowers,post hole diggers, tillers, BLA. BLA,BLA.
Sir---This is a worse case deal, however I would bet next weeks paycheck, that ALL of your impliments will require some sort of "set up" in order to buckle up to the quick hitch.
This advice come free of charge and is in referance to the several years of cotton production in west Texas that I was involved in. I am now involved in a tractor dealership. I sell many compact tractors and impliments.
A quich hitch is a wonderfull thing if your impliments weigh several tons, are 40 feet wide, and 10 feet long.
For the "compact Tractor" and weekend warrior, a quick hitch is really just another accessory that may or may not REALLY be needed. ....

Moose I disagree totally with your evaluation of the quick hitch, I have several herniated discs in my back and if not for my quick hitch I would not be able to hook up my implements to my tractor. It is true that some minor alterations were neccessary, but nothing like you describe. I have a finish mower,post hole digger,rake,weight box and boom all modified to work on my QH all needed just minor mods and work great. I am a doctor not a welder or mechanic if I can do these mods anyone can.

Sir;
I do agree that these mods can be done. It is NOT a hard thing to do. But it IS something that a person needs to be aware of. Everyone is differant. These mods, TO ME, are not a big deal, however I do have customers that would not be willing to tackle this project dur to not having the tools, or the time or not willing to spent the money to have it done. Again I state that quick hitches are great... you just need to be set up for them. I would compare this to owning a trailer. You will need a pickup to pull it with, sutible balls and hitches,More lights for the trailer which means a heaver load for the altinator, Heaver flasher, one more thing to register, and in some cases put a safty sticker on, Brakes, springs, floors, chains, straps, tires, wheels, bla, bla, bla... I am sure that if I had a bad back, I would certinally have a quick hitch. I am only 47, in good health, and a stick of wood to scoot around an 800 lb impliment works well for me. Have a good day sir. Virgil ....
