I am buying a New Holland Boomer (29 HP/25 PTO HP) and I plan on getting a shredder for mowing fence rows, etc. Can I also use the shredder to mow some of my 2.5 acre lawn? Is there any modifications that can be done to the shredder to make it a better finish mower? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sure you can use it anywhere, the rotary cutters will cut nice and short too! But its a much cruder device meant for whacking tall weeds and light brush. If you use it for both you would have to sharpen the blades first before attempting to finish mow with it. If you really aren't at all fussy it will work, but if you like a clean groomed look don't bother iwth this approach. ....

If you do fence-lines your best approach would be a sickle or bush-hog. Maybe not the best way to finsh mow but better all-around. I use a old dull set of blades on my bushhog for weeds, bush or where I might encounter rocks. Then I stick on my sharp ones to give my pastures that "groomed look". ....

In farm show Magazine a few years back, a guy showed using an old straw spredder off of an old combine (the rubber flapper kind) to mow under fences and it doesn't hurt the fence posts. He made a frame to hold it on the 3-point hitch and powered it with a gas motor. I am going to make one powered by the PTO and make it slide in and out to help go around fence posts. ....
