I have a 32 HP Kubota and am looking for advice about a reasonable 3-point backhoe attachment. Also I am getting mixed opinions on running it from remotes or a pto pump, but I am leaning towards the pto pump. Most of the units I have seen run off the tractor hydraulics.

I run my Kelly 650 3ph hoe off my 8.1 gpm tractor hydraulics. The setup works for my needs. The worst I can say is that sometimes I do some 'ho-humming' waiting for the boom lift. However, I usually run at about 2000 rpm or less with the hoe. I like most operating speeds that are produced at less than PTO rpm. If I get in a hurry, I can always boost the rpm. Most PTO pumps have greater capacity than tractor hydraulics and will run a hoe faster. However, I believe that faster operating speeds can produce greater operating shocks to the tractor and may subject a tractor to greater potential for damage. You should read the current thread about tractors breaking in half and similar archive threads if you haven't already done so.
There also was a relevant discussion on another board that unfortunately didn't have a conclusion. Somebody was running a new hoe from a PTO pump, and he was having extreme over-heating problems. Operating technique seemed to be the explanation (he was operating the hoe hard and frequently stalling the hydraulics). He moderated his operating technique and had some warranty repairs done on the hoe. The hoe ran cooler, but probably still much hotter than my hoe--at least judging from his description. Somebody contributed an interesting idea. He said that the problem might be the reservoir size. Tractors tend to have larger reservoirs in relation to pump capacity than PTO pumps. Heat has less chance to dissipate in the relatively smaller PTO pump reservoirs. An interesting idea, but as I said, I wish there was a conclusion.

Most compact tractors now days have enough hydraulic capacity to run a hoe. Plus a pto pump isn't cheap. I have a Kelley B600 on a 20hp YM1702. It has plenty of capacity. The B650 requires 3.5-4.5 gpm. I'm giving a 20% discount on Kelley products.Feel free to contact me at sheaftractor@coiinc.com or 815-284-3226.

Steve, Kelly makes a sturdy, dependable and straightforward product line. Their hoes will work as advertized, and while they are not as stylish as some, represent a good buy. I do recommend that if they don't have a sub-frame kit, you at all cost should buy their hitch accessory. This unit will transfer much of the shock/load encountered in operation to those parts of your machine that can handle the forces best. It is better than just the 3pt hitch alone, and although it slows down hoe removal somewhat, it gives you that extra margin of safety. The pump kit may not be needed if you have open hydraulics: remember, when you are using the hoe there is little if any demand on your hydraulics coming from other attachments. Even the down pressure your FEL bucket exerts shouldn't draw enough psi or gpm to make a difference. Try running from the power beyond first, if you have problems, you can always go with the pump kit later. Good luck. ....

Ups, a B600 is what I have too. I second the other comments. I like the hoe, and it has worked well for me. The Kelly 3ph mount uses a plate that is u-bolted to the draw bar and two additional top links that run from the plate to the upper hoe frame. I believe these top links serve to lock down the 3ph and also distribute some load onto the drawbar. I believe it's a good system, but it must be kept in adjustment to do its job. However, the entire load still is taken on the rear cases. The mount doesn't address failures that do occur in front of the draw bar mount. Another discussion here indicates that sub-frame mounts don't entirely address this issue either. I think the best thing is to recognize that no tractor is built like a dedicated hoe. Users of tractor equipped hoes should not imitate some of the operations that can be commonly seen done with dedicated hoes. It's also good to recognize that the 3ph must be locked down for safe use of a 3ph hoe, and there is the possibility that hitch lever can be bumped into a lift position. Happened to me once, and it took awhile for me to recognize the signs of the engine under heavy throttle and the relief valve screaming, but no damage done. ....

Steve, I put a woods 7500 on my jd 970 this spring
with a pto pump and subframe. The sub frame brackets
drasticly reduced my ground clearanace and the
brackets stay on when the hoe is not. But I think it
is still in the tractor's best interest to have one.
I believe the advantage of a pto pump is self
containment. The disadvantage is hot wiring the
safety switch under your seat to keep your pto
running. ....

The advantage of a pto pump is more hydraulic capacity. Its easier to unhook a couple snap couplers than to remove a hydraulic pump. ....
