I purchased (new) a four-wheel drive M4900 about a year ago. The tractor has done no heavy work, has only 55 hours on it and has been meticulously kept.

Problem:
When quickly engaging and disengaging the clutch (no matter what gear, what range, what speed or whether in 4 wheel or two wheel drive), I hear a click or pop. The quicker I engage/disengage the clutch, the louder the pop. Does anyone else have this problem. A Kubota mechanic told me it was just the slack in the gears but I seriously doubt that explanation because of the loudness of the noise.

Has anyone else had this noise in the rear end of a Kubota "M" model and what was the end result.

Yes that is the "slack" or back lash.
You are NOT supposed to engage the PTO "fast". That is like popping the clutch on a car. You are supposed to engage it slowly. Engaging it fast is not good for the tractor or the implement. ....
