starter problem on model G 1800

part of the time the pinion gear will not engage with the flywheel when the ignition activates the starter...
you can watch the pinion gear hit the face of the flywheel but it will not mate...if you move the flywheel a fraction the engine will start...can anyone give me a suggestion on how to troubleshoot this problem...thanks

Here is your problem; You need a new starter your bendix is shot. ....
