I have a 1986 kubota b 7100 (older version) and am looking for a belly mower to fit it. Kubota stopped making the b7100s in 1986 but started making them again in 1993. They make a mower that fits the 1993 and up model but according to the parts. dept it doesn't match the 1986 and older models. To me, the two tractors look identical. Is there a difference or will the newer belly mower fit the older tractor. I was also told that Woods made a belly mower to fit the older version but can't seem to find one. Any suggestions?

Many of the older Kubotas used the same as many of the mowers are today and require an electric PTO clutch. Back then it also required a shaft off the front of the engine to power it unlike the later model. Todays Kubota's use an independent hydraulic wet clutch like their big brothers the farm tractors. ....

Thanks for your response. I do have a mid-mount PTO and as I mentioned, the two tractors look identical and was told by several seasoned Kubota people that a newer deck would work on the old tractor with a little tweaking-just scared to spend the money on one and can't get it to work. ....

I think we have part of an old left over at one of our stores but I'm unsure of the exact fit. It normally is hard to find one by itself. If it is a gear drive I believe the deck stops on those when the clutch is depressed that is why they used the front clutch and that is the unit woods built. ....

Art's correct. Depending upon the vintage and the type of drive , whether gear drive vs. HST, the decks maybe considerably different.
With the gear drive for instance, when the clutch is depressed, because the "normal" drive would be coming from the transmission, as now seen as a norm, the deck speed would dump, and one would need to slowly engage the clutch again to bring the tranny back into play, and ultimately the deck drive as well. This is why they had a front mount pto drive from the front of the engine. The drive would stay active / live regardless of tranny conditions, so long as the cable of the front pto clutch was engaged.
The HST units, then and now, used the drive off the tranny, as the tranny output shaft (for mid PTO) would stay live when the pto was engaged, thereby keeping the deck spindles spinning. With this set up, no bulky front pto was needed.
Caution should be taken, as the decks from the old to the new have changed, including the lifting mechanisms. The older decks used a pantograph lift complete with chains, where as the newer used a much less complex setup, but with TOTALLY different brackets and linkage. At the very least, from front pto use to mid, one would have to change the position of the gear box of the deck by 180' - no biggy, just time consumed.
One can modify one deck to fit onto a different intended tractor - mostly thru rework and refab work of brackets. If you are handy that way, it should not be a difficult task. I have done this several times over, including on my 1980 B7100 gear unit. As of late, ten years now, my B5200 gear units, and last fall my B7500.
As you have found out, the older decks differ from the newer decks. To add another twist, there was also a rear pto drive available for a belly mount deck back then, I believe made for/by Woods as well. Haven't seen too many of those units...maybe for obvious reasons.
