Admittedly my 4400HST was early model with several mechanical problems that were remedied efficiently and quickly by the dealer. A new problem has appeared that I would appreciate hearing from others before I contact my dealer. The following appears (to me) to be transmission-related: Once in a while, when I take my foot from the pedal while mowing or doing loader work, the tractor will "freewheel" and just keep going for two to five seconds before it starts to slow down. Also, while backing down from on top of my pond dam, the tractor will sometimes start slipping for an instant, then take hold and then slip for an instant and then take hold and this may be repeated several times before reaching the bottom--the tires are not losing any traction. Also, during routine mowing on level ground with the belly when mowing up next to a bush or tree I take my foot off the pedal to stop and then push down on the reverse pedal and back up a few feet to change direction and when I remove my foot from the reverse pedal, instead of stopping immediately as usual, the tractor's transmission appears to stutter for several feet before the tractor comes to a stop. I am just curious if anyone else with a 4200-4300-4400 hydro has experienced these same symptoms?

Hi Mike,This is Mike From Iowa. We co-miserated on the early model problems earlier. I wimped out and ordered a 4600. anyway, I still have the 4400 waiting for the new one to get here. I have all those symptoms and that is why I decided to get a different tractor. I don't have any faith in this transmission. the dealer told me that the drive system was different in the 4600hst. this is a huge tractor i hope i didn't make a mistake because i was begining to like the 4400 for the size of it. The only one of the things you mention that I don't have is the backing up on level ground. I don't know how this will help you but you know I have one too. my sypathies are with you, Mike ....

Mike,I had a similiar problem, but I doubt it is the same as yours. I thought I would throw this out FYI anyway though. After about 80 hrs., my 4200 would continue forward for a few seconds after I released the pedel. Upon further inspection, I noticed the rubber floor mat was interferring with the pedel. It was rubbing on the piece of the pedel that goes through the floorboard. It would "hang" up and only allow the forward pedel to slowly return to neutral. I trimmed the rubber back some and it is fine now. I don't know why it waited until 80 hrs. to start doing this.Again, don't think this is related to your problem but might help someone else out.Chris ....
