While trapped at the in-laws house over the holidays I discovered that John Deere now recommends the first transmission oil and filter change at 50 hours.
Found this information at the Deere.com site where you can download an electronic version of most operators manuals.
My operators manual, 2 years old, shows the first change at 500 hours.

Neil,
John Deere has had some quality control issues with manuals in the past few years. I bought a 4700 new in 2000 and the manual that came with it had numerous misprints and JD has updated the manual twice since. Where I bought the tractor new I just called the JD customer service # and asked them to send me the most updated manual free and they did.
