Why did JD put the rear differential lock on the right side? I was climbing a hill in snow today and started to loose traction and went to hit the lock and of course my foot had to come off the foot throttle and I just about came to a stop and stuck. Should would have been nice to keep the tractor moving via throttle and locked the diff in with my left leg.

I have the same aggravation with my Ford 1710. The design may be aggravating, but it also might save owners some sizable repair bills. Diff locks are supposed to be engaged only when the tractor is stopped and the rear wheels not spinning. A design that makes operators take their feet off the foot throttle to use the diff lock probably saves a few diff case disassembles. I do engage my diff lock while the tractor is moving sometimes, but only at idle RPM's, and only when I'm not in a turn. However, I do know that I'm violating something or another. ....

MY manual just says to not engage at high speed or try to turn. Also not to engage it if one wheel is spinning and the other is stopped.
Then is says if tires repeatedly slip, then get traction, then slip again. hold pedal in the engaged position.
This is what I was trying to do and couldnt do it. Had to use the hand throttle which I dont like to do because I like the speed of my foot to cut off power if I have to stop fast.

Todd,
Is there away that you can custumize another foot thottle on the right side. I have seen farm tractors done this way for the same reason. ....

Yes it's an aggravation. On the other hand, most times when I have a traction problem I find that more RPM doesn't help much. If the tractor is going to pull out of a mire, it will do it at 1200 or 1400 RPM as well as at PTO speed. I just push in the clutch, depress the diff lock and then let out the clutch and hope the tractor will lug itself out at idle RPM. Adding rpm with the hand throttle is tempting, but I don't think that ever help me get out of a mire. Besides, spinning the tires can wear them out in a hurry. I want to avoid spinning them, and if I do then slower is better.
You may have noticed, that the manual may say not to disengage the diff lock when a rear tire is spinning. However, a diff lock won't actually engage until after one or both rear wheels have rotated some.
