Local Deere dealer has a 1998 JD 755 with 260 hours. Machine is 4WD, has a mid-mount 60" mower and 3 point hitch. The machine is clean. Dealer is asking $11,900. Is this price in reason? Are the 755's reliable? Any issues or deficiencies? Is the 755 a good choice for mowing 3-5 acres and doing some road grading? How about a loader? Would a person be better off buying a 4000 series machine considering the price of the 755? I'm new to compact tractors and would appreciate any/all replies.

I have found it helpful to go to www.machinefinder.com. Look around to seewhat other dealers are charging. JD dealers do seem to charge more for theirused machines than others do....just an observation. If you buy a machine in good shape, you can always get a good dollar forit if you need a different one. Tractors do seem to last just about forever. As for size, most any tractor will mow. Larger ones just mow a wider swatch. If the road grading is your main interest you will want to look at the largertractors. The 755 will do the work, but the larger the better when you start moving lots of dirt. Having said that, I built a road, pond, yard, and additionwith a tractor not quite as big as the 755. I did have good 4wd, chains, and aloader with two buckets. (one with rock teeth) I'd put a real priority on getting a quick detachable loader. You will be surprised at how many things you find to use it for. ....

DL; I think that price is in-line, although I would try to get him down 500 or so. I have a 755. It's a 1990 and I believe the used price guide would show it worth around 9600 in good condition. I also have a 60" mid-mount mower, #52 loader. If I was going to sell it today I would be asking 11,500. It has 560 hours on it. So I think the dealer isn't way out of line asking that for a '98 w/mower and very few hours. You have to remember, as the previous poster said, tractors last a long time, They hold there value much better than a car or truck. Because of that you may want to consider buying new, you will pay a little more but you will also know whether or not there was any abuse, but I don't think you have to worry about that in this situation, (it only mowed and very few hours). ....

I purchased a used JD755, 4WD with approx. 450 hours and turf tires. It came with a JD70 front end loader and a JD belly mower. It had been treated pretty rough and looked as if it had spent many nights outside. I paid $9500 for the set up. So far I have used it for tilling my garden, a little box blade work on the driveway, and moving dirt with the front end loader. I have been very happy with the results to date, but have nothing to compare it to, since this is my first trator. I do find myself using the 4WD at some points in most any task I attempt. I don't think I would have been happy with this tractor, if it did not have 4WD. ....

I have a '94 755 which I bought new, so I can't comment on the price that you and others are quoting. What I can tell you is the 755 is a great little machine - it is very reliable. As someone said, you will defintely want to put a 70 loader on that machine - I have one with a 60" bucket which translates to 10 cubic feet (roughly 1/3 yard). This might be a small machine but you will be surprised at just how much you can do with it. I would definitely NOT buy one w/o 4WD. If I had it to do all over again, I might have gone with the 855 to get a little more hp (24 vs. 20). Throw a box scraper on it and you can do your grading, mowing is a pleasure. For mowing, you will probably want turf tires, since the ags will rip up a decent lawn. ....
