I have a 1982 JD 950 and a MF59 model bushhog. I have heard about shear pins and slip clutches and am wondering if I have a safe guard on my setup. I know the 950 has a overrunning clutch and you can hear it ratchet as you push the clutch in to stop. Would this clutch also protect things if I were to hit a stump or something? I have a little lot and field mowing business going this summer and so far its been going great but am wondering if I need to do something to protect the equipment some more?!?!ThanksTodd

No, the overrunning clutch will not protect the 'hog from sudden impacts with rocks or stumps. However, I can't imagine a modern 'hog without either a slip clutch or a shear pin. Look just in front of the gearbox on the 'hog, and you should see two round plates with a number of bolts/springs/nuts through them. That would be the slip clutch. It's probably under some sort of shield. If you don't see a slip clutch, look for a pin or bolt through the pto shaft where it couples to the gearbox on the 'hog. It may be as simple as a soft bolt with nut and washer, probably 1/4 or 5/16's. ....
