Could anyone tell me the difference in the Indirect injected Diesel motor in the Boomer and the Direct injected diesel motor in the John Deere. Is one style better than the other or not?

The newer technolgy is the direct injection which improves performance and reduces fuel consumption, noise and exhaust emissions. Previous generations of diesel engines were of the indirect injection method. This involved having part of the explosion happen in the prechamber to help get rid of the noise. In a direct injection diesel a special swirl chamber is used to inject the fuel. Sound dampening is also used to make it quieter. Through the use of this swirl chamber and a chip that has many different preset modes of injecting the diesel the other common characteristics with diesel (smelly exhaust, loudness, and lack of power) are overcome. ....

Direct injection will probably be more common in the future. It seems to be more widely used with computer control of injector timing and rate. Indirect has beenused for a long time and has a good history of durable performance. I wouldn'tbase any decision on which one to buy on which type of injection is used. ....

The Kubota engines are indirect injection and they are some of the cleanest, most fuel efficient and quietest engines out there. Very little smell and except for a puff at start up, no visible exhaust. The indirect injection Kubota engines were the first engines to meet the new California emission regulations for diesels. Both types of engine can work very well. I agree that you should not even consider the difference in injection type when picking a tractor. ....

I thought indirect injection was quieter? Or at least thats what I wastold when I asked why my B5.9L Cummins was louder than a 7.3L Powerstroke.I did hear that the direct Injection was more efficient and cleaner burning. ....
