I'm looking mostly at used Kubotas & JDs for hogging, hauling, & loader work on 13 acres of pasture. One under consideration is a 1990 955, 4wd, 33/30 pto hp, 1187 hrs., pwr steering, hydrostatic, with a loader & ag tires, for $15,000. The dealer said JD's goal with this model was a small, maneuverable powerhouse. I've seen 4100's & they look like lawn tractors on steroids, size-wise, so I'm hoping this rig has more size & weight going for it. If we're here for awhile, I might be tempted to attempt excavating a pond, though I understand that that may be a project for a pro with more appropriate equipment. Any wisdom about this model, and, of course, the price for a grateful novice?

Keith; The JD 55 series are a great compact tractor. You will love it, although I think the dealer is asking about $.5 to $1K to much for it. Year does not mean as much as hours. The engine, if in very good condition has about 2/3rds of its life left, IMHO. I have a 1990 JD 755 which I bought this past July. It only had 313 hrs on it, a #52 loader and a 60" belly mower and I paid $12,550.I thought that was a good deal. A 755 is only 20 engine hp. and not the hp of the 955 but the hrs are almost 4X as much so I think that would bring the price down a bit. I am not an expert so you should talk with others on this and other forums. hope this helps,David ....

I looked at the 955 tractor last year. For your info, a new 955 with loaderwould only run about 2000 - 2500 more than the one you are looking at used. I believehe is pretty high on his price. I bought an 870 instead because I wanted the additional weight and capacities that it offered over the 955. The 955 felt more like a garden tractor to me, therefore the reason i went with the 870. I really do not have a problem with the shifting of the 870. The area I mow is fairly wide open and I do not do a lot of loader work. Hope this helps. ....

Dear Gary and David: Your replies are tremendously helpful. Two things are remarkable: that this communication technology has made this kind of exchange possible; and that people would take the time to help each other out in this way. I am very grateful. Sincerely, Keith ....

Personaly,I think 15k is kind of high for that many hours. The size of the 955 is rather small and there is no way you would dig a pond unless its the size of a small car.A 70 series or an older 50 series would be better with any amount of hogging.I believe there are a lot better choices to consider.I just went from a 850 to a JD4500 for mostly the size difference.Better to overbuy than underbuy and be glad you did down the road. ....
