I am currently lookin at a "Tractor Supply" finishing mower (5')for 999.00. It says it has a 40 hp gearbox. Can my 790 handle this piece of equipment. Has anybody had any experience with this particular mower? It is selling for about 500.00 cheaper than the John deere suggested in the catalog. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks in advanceBob

You might want to take a look at Landpride and/or Woods finish mowers. I think you will find superior quality, dependability and durability. In fact, both are probably a bit cheaper than Deere mowers, and I believe of better quality. Good Luck. ....

Bob, I agree with J. Dubbs; look at the other brands he mentioned, and also at the Bush Hog brand (which is what I use). I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the one you're looking at, at Tractor Supply, but if you look at the others and compare them, I think you'll see why the Tractor Supply mower is cheaper. ....

I have a JD4100 and bought a 5' King Kutter(Quality Farm and Fleet). The front end on my tractor is a little light with the mower on, but nothing intolerable. I would expect that the front end of yours would be a little heavier. You should not have a problem. As far as quality, I have had mine for a year and have no complaints. I am not sure what a couple hundred extra dollars would have bought me other than a brand name. I guess in 20 years, I might look back and have the answer, but for now I do not see any problems with the lower priced store models.

Good luck! ....

Since nobody has answered your question, I'll give it a try. Yes, your 790 will handle the mower. The 40 horse power gear box is the maximum rated input. I believe the 790 has 27 hp PTO, so you are within specs. I agree with the others, I don't have a bush hog, but my neighbor has a less expensive Howser, he has had it about 2 years and its see some rough use and had to reweld braces. It still mows good, but not standing up like the name brands. ....

Bob, sorry, I guess Halsey is right, myself and the others who responded to your question seem to have answered the most important part of your question, which related to the brand of mower to purchase. Go with a well respected name brand who specialize in mowers like Woods or Landpride. Halsey's explanation on the gear box is correct except the JD 790 has a PTO HP of 25 not 27, still well below the 40 HP max associated with the mower you're considering. ....

I would add Rhino to that list of high quality finish mowers. Mine has been great and is very well made. It is an FM60, but it is about $1500. I am not familiar with the mower that Tractor Supply sells. ....
