I am looking at buying a small tractor with loader and finish mower for use on my yard and pasture. At the moment, I have one acre of yard and five acres of Argentine Bahia pasture. I live in S. Fla and have mostly sandy soil. I also have horses and need a loader for the manure pit, as well as for clearing scrubb from another two acres. I have about $6000-7000 to spend for a used tractor. Is this a reasonable amount, and how "used" is "too used"? How many engine hours are too many and how much does the age of the machine matter if it looks to be in good condition. I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks

I went through the same thing less than a year ago. It isn't easy. Right now, I've got the flu, so I won't try to summarize some good previous discussions on the same subject.

You might search the archives here and on tractorbynet for first time buyer and used tractor discussions. These are really good forums for novices to start sorting all this stuff out. I'd read these forums as long as possible before becoming an active buyer.

Myself, I eventually bought a used Ford 1710 through a dealer. I figured that, knowing little about tractors, there would be less chance of getting something really bad through a dealer. And, with a dealer, you have the luxuary of asking questions for awhile.
