I am looking at a 1989 650 2WD R1 tires, 280 hours, aftermarket loader and rear blade, weights and utility trailer. Asking $7500. I will use it to move snow, maintain 300' driveway, move horse manure. I am a first time buyer and looking for any and all comments. What price would make this a livable deal since it's only 2WD and no power steering W/loader? My dream machine is a 4200 or 4300 4WD hydro but the price is way out of range.

The 650 was just fine, but you are giving up two of the three most important things on a compact tractor....at least you get one of them - the loader. And original JD power steering can be added for $700.00 (kit price). If you get this tractor I you better budget for the power steering. It won't be available forever. The big downside is that the smaller the tractor, the more important 4wd becomes. And the 650 was the smallest compact JD sold. There is a price at which the 2wd becomes an acceptable deal on a clean JD, and my personal opinion is based on a price that you could get if you resold the tractor tomorrow. Around this area (Colo.) that would put that price somewhere around 6000-6500.
If you do by a small 2wd, you can expect a lot of wheel spin when using the loader or when in the snow. If your driveway is steep, you might have trouble going up it with the loader full or when it is snowing. ....

Would the 2WD gear/diff box have excess wear due to the factors you mention? The more I think about it $6000 still might not be a deal. ....

Hmmm...I think I've been responsible for some mis-interpretation here. I'll try to get it right this time. A light weight 2wd compact with a loader is going to spin the tires....and particularly when tying to go uphill. But this does not hurt anything except perhaps your patience. If anything, it puts less wear on the trans/diff assembly. At 280 hours, you are barely broken-in on that tractor. They were a very reliable tractor and overbuilt. If it is in good shape, it will last as long as you want to keep it.
Likewise for the lack of power steering....Not having it makes loader work a lot more of a chore than it needs to be, but it doesn't hurt the tractor at all.
Not having the 4wd is the real drawback. Compact tractors and 4wd just go together. Even the small ones have plenty of horsepower, so that traction is always the limiting factor. And 4wd is the answer to more traction. But if you can live with some wheel spin, and particularly if price is a concern, then there is a price where it makes sense to buy it if for no other reasons than it will do a lot more work than a person with a shovel, and JD compacts hold their value very well.
For $6000 you aren't going to find a better deal without a major search plus some luck. It is still a JD, and you've still got the option of adding the power steering kit. (Part #AR99993) You should price the kit; they vary a lot from dealer to dealer. Hope that this helps. ....
