I have a Ford 1910 with the syncromesh transmission. I have recently developed a problem where the transmission would jam when shifting from reverse to the forward gears. I would have to jiggle the column shifter quite a bit to get it to release. At first I thought the problem was in the linkage and shifter selector coming out of the top cover, since they seemed to be played out. I have since corrected the linkage and shifter selector slop, but I still have occasional hang up's from the reverse to forward shifting.

I also adjusted the clutch to take out excessive free play, but it would seem to me I would have more of a problem going in and out of PTO if the clutch was not adjusted correctly since the top half of the clutch release deals with gear selection. The history on the tractors previous life was in a nursery primarily as a loader so I'm sure it's seen a fair amount of shifting in it's time, plus the hour meter is at 1710 hrs. My next step is to remove the top cover again and check the detent balls on the shifting rods for excessive wear. But I am open to any suggestions that you guy's might have.

Thanks,
Ray

I wonder if the problem is that the TX doesn't disengage when in gear or doesn't engage (locks in neutral)? I also wonder if the 1910 synchro has the gear selector on the steering column and the range selector on the TX top-cover like my 1710? I'm a bit scuppered since my 1710 repair manual doesn't include the 1910 but my parts manual doesn’t include 1910's. I can see exploded pats for 1910's but I have repair procedures only for 1710's.

My impression is that there's not a lot that's accessible through the top-cover, although since you've had it off you probably know what can be done. Unfortunately, almost all repair procedures start with 'remove the TX (see splitting the tractor).' I don't imagine that's what you want to do.

From the parts manual, it looks like a cap, spring and several washers that cover the shift-rail detent balls might be removed without taking off the top-cover. A small possibility is that the detent balls might be fished out with a magnet. If the top-cover is removed, I'd think about the possibility of the springs dropping out of the top-cover and into the cases.

I guess checking the detent balls is a possibility. I don't think of them as high stress parts and don't know if the rail notches or balls would be more likely to wear first. Unfortunately, the TX does have to be removed to replace the rails, shifting forks etc. I vaguely recall hearing of a problem being fixed by tightening a fork on its rail. These TX's use roll pins to secure the forks, and I'm not sure there's anything to tighten and if there is, safety wire is used. It's doubtful much could be done through the top-cover.

There is a possibility that the interlock pins might be involved, and they might be accessible under plugs on the side of the cases. I don't know if these pins are possible candidates or if they are accessible.

Overall, I'd take a guess that the fault is still in the shift linkage--especially if it's on the steering column. This type of part, including the shifting forks themselves can become bent and create similar problems. It would be good if somebody made a more specific response.

Tom,
Thanks for the responce, actually you gave a pretty detailed responce to my problem. I mowed grass all weekend so I did not get a chance to look under the cover again. You are correct in assuming that I do not want to split the tractor and will leave that as my last resort.
Thanks again,
Ray ....

I'm not sure yours is the same problem but, some Massey Ferguson tractors have the same sort of problem. I know of a few MF's that have had this problem. It's actually the shifting yokes that are causing the problem and not in the gearing. ....
