Howdy,

It seems that all of my 4wd problems are pointing to the fact that the pinion nut on the front axle keeps "backing" off. With the pinion nut loose, the pinion slides into the case and the forward driveshaft looses it engagement enough that it slips out. The pinion nut has a washer that has exterior tabs the get bent up to keep the nut from rotating, but nothing keeps the washer from rotating. The pinion shaft does not have a hole for a cotter pin, or a keyway for the washer mentioned above.... Has anybody dealt with this before?
Thanks again for all of the help!

Brett

If this is the nut and washer you are talking about the washer has an inner tab that should lock in a spline. http://www.hoyetractor.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=SA-4191

Interesting.....

The second link shows exactly what the washer looks like. Except the inner bent tabs have been removed.

The nut on the first link is different; the one shown makes sense, while the one I have has eight sides..

I checked again last night and my pinion shaft does not have the two grooves for the washer above or a hole for a cotter pin. I am contemplating using a cutoff tool to put two notches in the shaft..

Think that will work? ....

I read your post on the Hoye sight. I was confused about which shaft and lock nut you were talking about. I see you are talking about the input pinion shaft of the ring and pinion. That pinion nut http://www.hoyetractor.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=HTE&Category_Code=2000TRANSINT shout have a cotter pin go through it and the pinion shaft. Should be a 2.5x50 metric cotter pin. I am sure others would work.

Also meant to add I have seen pins sheared off in shafts before and unless closely looking you might miss the hole actually being there. ....

I never thought of it being sheared off! Great idea. I will take a very close look at it when I get home tonight. I looked at the link that you sent and it is not that pinion shaft. It is the pinion shaft in the front axle (housing). There were threads all around the shaft when I looked at it. The cotter pin could have been sheared off and a new nut put on that cut threads in what remained of the pin. That could be why it looks like there is nothing there...

This tractor had a broken frame where the forward part of the loader mounts. It runs good but has been beat pretty bad. I am changing all of the fluids and going through everything. The gear oil that came out of the front axle housing was turquoise... But at least there were no teeth in it!! ....

It is there!! I took a punch and lightly tapped on where I thought that it could be and two pieces of a sheared off cotter pin fell out of the shaft!

Just ordered the nut and am really looking forward to getting this back together. Thank you for the idea! ....

No, i really can't tell from the picture. I see something right at the top at the end of the threads but can't identify it. Sounds like you may have her going before long. ....
