Should I get an engine heater

The Nortrac 25 hp 4x4 doesn't come with a pre-heater for starting on cold days. Has anyone added it to the tractor and if so what kind? Is it worth it, will I have trouble starting it on days around 10F? I don't see myself using it much this winter, maybe just to move some snow around or something, so I added stabil to the fuel and I plan on running it about once a month for at least 30 min. Should I do anything else to winterize it?

Thanks,
FMC

Glow plugs and manifold heaters are pre-heaters. I think you mean engine heaters; water or oil. Unless they've changed the design, the bottom of the Y385 crancase is ribbed. As such, contact heaters won't work . Folks have reported satisfaction with lower radiator hose heaters, and a few have tried freeze plug heaters. Of the two, I think I'd put more trust in the lower hose heater.

Should I get an engine heater

Just purchased a Farm Pro 2435 in Colorado. The dealer added a block heater that fit into one of the freeze plugs. NAPA part I believe.

Works great when it is less than 20F.

Make sure you add "911" to the fuel
to make sure the desil does not gel
on you. If you still have summertime fuel
in it, it will not be thinned down with kero
for the winter.
I use a magnetic heater on the trans
occasionally to speed up the time it takes
to get the 3 point lift to work.
I have glow plugs, and the high amperage
battery so starting it seems to be ok.
For prolonged 0 degree weather I would probably
place an electric heater under the motor and
let all the heat rise under the hood. I think
for a given wattage, the electric heater
puts out more heat than the surface mount
block heaters.

A trickle charger on the battery will keep it at 100% and crank the engine faster to improve cold weather starting.

I used a synthetic oil made by AmsOil in '95 Dodge Ram. At 10 below zero (upper penn. of Mich.)it spun over like it had been a summer day---and that was a gas engine with no heating devices. Without that oil the starter would really labor. You can buy AmsOil from distributors and, at aleast in Michigan, even local parts stores.

Also a 110vac battery warmer/blanket would likley extend the battery life and help starting.
