Massey Ferguson 1533 tractor stalls when pto engaged

1533 massey ferguson will mow for about an hour and stall in mid stride. After it stalls I turn the pto off and take it out of gear (it is a hydrostatic) and it will almost always start right back up. Sometimes I have to wait 5 to 10 minutes and then start it. It will usually run for about another 40 minutes to an hour before it does it again but it will do it after a while. The tractor will run just fine if no pto is engaged. In fact sometimes when the tractor begins to stall I reach down and shut the pto off and the tractor does not stall.

Any advice on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Thank You

First welcome to TP.

Have you had it to happen with only ONE pto implement or more than one? If only one first check the implement's gear box to be sure it has proper lube in it. It could be getting hot and slowly binding putting extra load on the tractor.

But it could be something with the tractor as simple as air filter or fuel filter need replacing. Of those two would suspect fuel is more likely the issue. Don't think air would require the tractor to site. If not the implement the next time it does this be prepared to check and see if fuel is getting to the pump, at least through the filters. Could be trash in tank or hose or clogged filter. Also could be air vent for fuel tank is partly clogged creating vacuum in fuel tank stopping flow. Fits what you describe. Cutting off the pto of course reduces the power needed so less fuel is needed.

Massey Ferguson 1533 tractor stalls when pto engaged

I've only owned the tractor for 5-6 months and have put about 35-40 hours on it. I did change all the oil, etc and had it tuned up at the dealer before I used it so maybe it's time for all that again.

I only own one implement with a PTO and that's the mower but the work has been dusty so I could see where there may be issues with the air/fuel filter. I did check the mower and it does turn freely (the blades could use a sharpening however). The gearbox on the Bush Hog does get warm yet I can leave my hand (uncomfortably warm though)on it after mowing for a few hours. There is no dipstick or other means to check the oil in it. Any idea how I would do that? There is a plug on the side but obviously if I remove that the oil would come out.

I did have an issues with trach in the tank a couple months ago. I took it to the dealer where they charged me $240 (ouch) to siphon the fuel out and blow the debris out of the tank. It was a similar problem where the tractor would bog down but would "stall" slowly- just like it is running out of fuel. The new problem stalls the tractor VERY abruptly and is different then the previous problem.

Would an issue with the hyrostatic filters cause any problems like this?

I'll change air/fuel filters to see if it helps. Are there any online dealers to order the filters from?

Thanks for the help.

Greg
