1987 JD 850, 4WD, with loader and power steering, 650 hours. The problem is that the bucket sinks slowly, suggesting a hydraulic misfunction. A heavy load makes the bucket sink a bit faster. The bucket also curls forward slowly. In addition, the three point hitch will sink slowly after the engine is off. I have had the primary loader cylinders rebuilt. My chief suspect is the hydraulic controller, but this is an expensive part and I would appreciate any other opinions/experience before attempting any repairs. Also, the power steering works well to the right, but requires some muscle to turn left.

I have a 1997 JD model 855 with similar problems. It has a backhoe on the back and a front loader on the front. The front loader is very slow to dump and the back hoe sinks down as I work the tractor and evenually drags on the ground. I have to keep pulling it back up. I think I am going to put a chain on it to keep it up, but I am also concerned about the slow dumping problem as well. If you have any insight to my problem; I sure would appreciate a reply.

Thanks,
Rod Coelho

The FIX! A new hydraulic controller fixed all the problems I listed, at a cost of $415. The bucket is now very strong, will lift the front end, doesn't sag, etc. A bit of an investment, but worthwhile.

Dennis-
I too have a JD 850 1984. I experience the same power steering problem. Easy to one side and hard to the other. What is the hydraulic controller? I also wanted to talk to you about the loader. Do you have 2wd? Are you pleased with its performance (lift)? My 3point also sinks very slowly days to sag all the way down. Do you know the capacity of out 3 point hitch (#'s)? Thanks

The controller I was referring to is the metal box, about 2X4X7 inches, located near the bottom of the control levers for the loader. It has several hydraulic hoses and pipes coming and going from it. This is the control mechanism that sends hydraulic fluid to the various pistons, etc. In my case, an 87 4 wheel drive, it is located on the right side, below the seat. As to you other questions, I am now pleased with the lift of the bucket, it seems very strong. As to the 3 pt lift capacity, I don't know. I've used a brush-hog with no problem. Lastly, I should have been clearer with the recent post. All is well with the loader and 3pt hitch, but the power steering still requires some muscle to turn left in 4WD. In 2WD it turns easier. Good luck with your 850.
