Would seem mechanic would think of anything I would but clogged air filter or air intake system is one think some miss. Does it heat up real fast of slow over heat after running with heavy load? If slow may be using too high a gear or too low a rpm.

Proper coolant? Other symptoms of leaking head gasket?

it went up to 214 within an hour on a 60 degree day, the mechanic said it wasn't a leaky head gasket and we have checked the air filter etc. I guess we are going to flush the cooling system next. 228 deg. and the warning light comes on, the other day the mechanic was here and it went up to 214 and he was puzzled??

In the heat, the proper antifreeze concentration cools better than straight water.

Maybe an obstruction. Put brand-name cooling-system cleaner in, run for a bit, drain the rad and inspect what comes out. Then get the block back-flushed.

I'm sure obvious things like the fan and belt have been checked.
