JD 790 is there a title like there is on an auto?

I am embarrassed I do know the answer to this. I am in the process of buy a JD790 from an individual. He's telling there is no Title on farm tractors like this. Is this true? Thank you in advance for your input.

In New York State this is true. This is not a motor vehicle. I tried to get farm plates for my tractor and went to the Dept of Motor Vehicles. I asked for farm plates - they first asked for me to fill a form which required a title. After some confusion I was routed to someone with experience. There is no title for tractors, no farm plates are issued. They are only issued for fast moving vehicles like trucks used on farms.

There are no titles issued for tractors, but there are serial numbers. If there is a concern, run the serial numbers through the local police department.

In Canada there is a second parallele system run by the Federal Governement.

It is intended to track and prove ownership of "non vehicular items of real property" being exported temporarily to another country. The concept is sold as a way to prove what you had when you left the country. It used by the Government for MANY other uses though, and while a little "big brother'ish" it serves a very usefull function to the owner as well. The certificate issued, and the record created, is supposed to serve as proof of export.

In our case, the way it works is, as we cross the border heading to the US with equipment, we show it to Canadian & US Customs as we cross the border, and again coming back into the country on the way home. That way we can prove it is Canadian equipment and there is no taxes or duties owning on it, as there would be if purchased in the US while we were away.

The reality of it is, the US also knows if we leave the country without it. IE an undeclared import.

The bonus from our point of view though, is the Government has a permanent record of who owns a particular machine. We have had several instances where we got a call from Customs saying there was somebody leaving the country with a tractor shown as belonging to us, upon checking our records we found it had been sold off. Customs amended the record and sent him along on his merry way.

The database is searchable by all law enforcment agencies.

I'm sure the US Customs would have the same type of system.

Best of luck.

I had an instance once where we transfer a piece of equipment to a Canadian dealer. I happened to be off that day, well who ever was doing my job messed up and put the wrong piece on the truck. By the time I got to work the next day the damage was done. They got to the border and were not aloud to enter. Wrong serial number. They had to turn around and come back.

I don't think they do Murf, we'd better keep tis type of knowledge quiet or we will have to have a muti billion dollar study for ten years to study the feasablity of implementing it. It does seem strange they can find the barn that one cow came from but can't find 500,000 illegal immigrants.

Big difference: The illegal immigrants DON'T WANT to be found, the cow / barn does not care.

Hmmmmm, I see, now I was thinking it's more likely that the business owners who hire wet-backs donate more to political parties than do the farmers.

Or as a cynical, screwed over Canuck farmer, I figure that they decided getting rid of the illegal labour would hurt the economy, as opposed to illegally getting rid of the competition and boosting the economy.

Best of luck.

Our state does not have titles for farm tractors either.

As to the illegals...really makes you wonder...that goes for both parties. As to the millions for the study, again, who said a politician had common sense?
