I just purchase a jd 850 1984. however the brakes donot work. Any ideas?

Check your brake linkage first to see if they can be adjusted.
Where the brake cam pins go through the brake shoe cover are prone to freezing up/rusting to the cover. The pins may need punched out of the cover and lubricated.

If the brake shoes are worn and need replaced be prepared for sticker shock.
The shoes cost somewhere around $60 per shoe x 4 shoes.

Also check for oil in the brake drum/housing.There should be no oil in the brake drums..
The 850 has dry drum brakes.
There is a seal on the pinion shafts that can leak oil into the brake drum and cause the brakes to not work well. ....
