 questons about JD 650

Just got a JD650 and have a couple of questions. Where can I get the roll gard and canope? The person that sold it to me said it had a 30 HP engine. Looking at the net I see every thing form 18 to 30 How do I find out for sure what the HP of mine is?

Thanks.

geekfarmer; The 650's were rated at 16 hp. with a two cyinder Yanmar engine, unles someone has installed a different engine they don't have 30 hp. Finding a roll gard probably isn't going to happen unless you or soneone else builds one for it. It may be tough to find a welder willing to build a roll gard for anything, home made ones are a lawyers paridise in case someone gets hurt with it. Frank.

Thanks for the replay. That is what I was afraid of. I have 5 acers and use a 5 ft brushog to maintain it. Don't think 16 HP is enough. Looks like I am in the market again. So Sad

It's even worse than that. 16hp is the engine rating, there's only about 14.5hp at the PTO. Using the 5hp per foot rule, that's not even enough for a 4ft bushhog for anything other than very light duty mowing.

5 acres of even medium duty mowing will soon use up what's left of that little 650. Get out from under it while there's still some equity.

I checked the Yanmar website, they didn't show anything other than to call a distributor or a Deere dealer for information. I had a neighbor who bought either a 650 or 850, I can't remeember for sure which when they first came out with a midmount mower. They mowed LOTS of lawn and since he passed away his widow in her 80's still keeps all that lawn neat as a pin with it. Far as I know it still has the original engine, but he was very meticulous at mantinence too. The 650's and 850's both were really just a heavy duty lawn mower, not enough torque to handle much of a tiller or rotary mower. Frank.

Now I am realy confused. I got it as a package, the 650, a 261 60" mower and a 4Ft box blade. Had the front weights and all. He had been using the mower to take care of approxmittly 2 acers for severl years. I have tried both the box blade and the mower. Seemed to handel them ok. Used a carry all to restock my fire wood supply next to the house. The holder I built holds about 1/2 rick of wood. Made the front rather light but other than that it worked ok.

Geekfarmer; If my memory serves me correctly your 261 mower ia a rear mount Deere finish mower, yes it should handle that nicely and your four ft. box blade will work fine till you run out of traction. The front weights will make things work lots better for both the mower and the box blade. If you are happy with what the 650 does for you then that's all that really matters. Unless time is a restriction five acres of lawn isn't really that big of a deal, I used to mow 4 acres of lawn with a 345 Deere rider with a 54 inch deck at just about an acre an hour. If it is in reasonably good shape now, then with good care it should last you for years. Depemding on whether your tractor has the hydraulic circuts to handle a loader, you maybe could find a used front end loader to fit it too, that would make you a nice package. Frank.
