Over the winter, I plan to clean up the bottom side of my mower deck real good and put some paint on it. What would be a good (DURABLE) paint to use for this? Most of the original paint is long gone, and I'd like to get it cleaned up (good winter project).

No matter what you paint it with, the action of grass blowing across it and the acids involved is gonna more than likely strip it all off over the next mowing season anyway. What I do with mine as part of the pre-storage drill is clean it up REAL good, wire brush it down to clean metal, then spray with with a metal preservative/rust converter. I like NAPA Extend. Any phosphoric acid based solution will do. ....

Craig, I tried 3 different ones that the paint and hardware store recommended. Like Paul said, none lasted long enough to be worth considering again. I finally just started using nothing but a mixture of 3 parts diesel and one part motor oil and spray a real thin light coat of that on it. ....

Thanks!! I figured someone would know what would work or tell me not to waste my time. I think I'll go the clean and lube route and save the rattle can for the next job. ....

You can use POR-15 it won't come off! It is perfect for this application. The only thing that effects it is sunlight and there isn't any of that under a mower deck. ....

I spotted some special paint for mower decks the other day at the autopart dealer. It looked like the same material that they are selling for coating your truck bed in smaller cans.
Most of the truck bed material are crossinked paints. These will resist the acids and impacts. I am not sure how easy it would be to recoat if damaged. You might need to sand it to get machanical bonding.
