years ago i changed my brush whacker from shear pin to a clutch version.

i have a jd 4400 and just engaging the pto at anywhere near 1000 rpm would cause the shear pin to go. the problem appeared to be that there was enough difference between the diameter of the hole and the pin that the pin would tend to get slapped pretty hard against the housing and snap. i also just got tired of having to repair the damn thing out in the field when ever i'd hit a clump of brush or saplings.

the clutch drive solved all my problems. just be sure to inspect it to verify that it isn't frozen up after it's sat for a long period of time, i.e., beginning of every work season.

BTW,

I wish I could get a loader with higher lifting capacity than my 430 on to my 4400 --- of course the pump would have to replaced. I want to be able to move 3 ton rocks around.

Hmm, maybe I do need a bigger tractor. What's the brand of this new fancy tractor?

This is kind of an interesting discussion, this business of the hydro holding on a slope.

I have a jd 4400 hydro that I purchased before I bought a jd 245 lawn tractor. I also have property with varying degrees of slope up to about 33 deg that I routinely work with the tractor. I got use to the tractor crawling up and down these slopes with predictable behavior, i.e., “take my foot off the control and the tractor stops with little or no creep”. I made the mistake of believing that all hydro's perform the same and expected the 245 to be as well behaved as the 4400 --- big mistake.

Two rolling crashes later I've learned to just use the thing on flat ground. Very unpredictable.

Billy,

Are the angles 10,20 and 30? It's difficult to see on my monitor. But if they are it looks like the grade is calculated wrong ... should be 17.6, 36.4 and 57.7.

But having said that, depending on that surface our little compacts should back right up any of those. Looks like they may have some anti skid stuff on there, hard to say.

For one thing, if you do much work on property with any kind of slope you will appreciate the hydro. Much of my property is sloped so I appreciate not having to bother with sifting and changing gears. Take my foot off the throttle pedal and I stop.

I have a 4400 so I can't comment on the bene's of the electronic stuff.

I have a 4400 that I use to pull around a 513 rotary cutter, (among other things). I originally bought the cutter with a shear pin drive but eventually installed a clutch drive because I got so feed up with breaking the shear pin even when I would engage at idle.

There's a hell of a lot of torque generated and any slop in the shear pin hole will cause the pin to snap. I even tried a class higher in the shear bolt to no avail, (didn't want to risk breaking something by going higher). (BTW, my dealer eventually did say that he sees a lot this, and sell a lot of shear pins as well!)

The clutch system has been working fine. It's designed and built to take the stress. I figure at worse in a few years I'll need to replace the plates.
