A 2200 is a pretty small mahine for making a motocross track. I built one with my New Holland TC40D (16la loader)for racing my Banshee on, and it took a considerable amount of time. I don't think you'll have any problem with hurting the tractor unless you are overloading it, but I think you'll be a little dissapointed with how long it will take. A buck full of dirt just doesn't cover as much ground as you would think. I had a huge pile of fill dirt (probably about 3 tandem truck loads) and I went through it in a hurry but didn't have many jumps to show for it. A small woops section and one double.

Good Luck! It may take some time to build, but I think you'll have fun doing it, as well as hours of fun with the result.

Any Mechanical engineers out there who spend alot of time calculating efficiencies of engines? Its been too long since my Thermo or Heat transfer couses to remember the exact equations etc, but I do know that the Compression Ratio of the engine has a ton to do with how efficient it is. Therefore the diesel does better than gasoline (i.e. MOST gas engines are anywhere from 8-10:1, racing engines are much higher, while diesels are somewhere in the neighborhood of 20:1 for compresion ratio) unfortunately double the compression ratio does not=double the efficiency.

TomG, it would be interesting to know what a gallon of diesel can produce in BTU's vs. a Gallon of gasoline. I had never put much thought into that, but if diesel is much higher we all might be a little embarassed and find out gasoline engines are more efficient, but I doubt it.

what about a pulverizer (http://www.woodsonline.com/)? I've never used one but it looks as though it would do a good job leveling out semi rough ground. They are basically just I beams turned on edge with several hardend tines that break the surface of the soil. Most also have one or two roller aerator wheels that follow to help level and aerate the soil. I don't think it would dig in deep enough to remove the bumps from a recently plowed field though, not in one pass anyway.

I think you are making a wise choice. I own a TC40D with a pull behind 3pt mower. It does a great job in the open field etc, but around the house its just not very practical. I have actually been considering buying ZTR mower just for around the house. If you you have the space and the money I'd keep them both.

TomG is correct, make sure you have a pump with enough flow to run the splitter. I bought one not realizing how slow mine would run. I don't recall what brand my splitter is off the top of my head, but the speed at which is operates is a function of Hydraulic Pistion Diameter and Pump volume. Mine is a 4" piston (with 24" of stroke). It ran very poorly (slow) on my old Cub Cadet at ~6 GPM, but it does pretty good with my New Holland that is ~10GPM, both had sufficent pressure, the Cub just didn't have the flow rate. I'm guessing most splitters have a 4" Piston, I think if you are over 10GPM in flowrate you'll be OK.

FOr my 40x60' barn I used Treated 6x6" poles that I sunk 30" deep into the ground by just using a post hole digger. At the bottom of the holes I placed a round concrete footer that was about 16" in DIamet and 4" thick. On the outside edge of the poles I nailed a 4"x6" piece of treated lumber about 12" from the bottom to give it an edge that would have to displace ground if it were to try and heave. NOt sure if that made any difference, but after 3 years there has been no movement yet. I live near St. Louis MO so aour winters usually aren't too severe, but we do experience about 6 weeks of at or below freezeing weather.

Peters, You brought up a good point that I should have mentioned. All oils do have chain like molecuels that do break down overtime. Even straight weight oils. This is why even gear transmissions and rear ends need the oils changed periodically, even though they are not exposed to blowby from the motor etc. Eventually the oil just losses its ability to maintain a sufficient cushion layer between moving parts.

I previous owned Cub Cadet 7000 series tractor that I used to run my log splitter. I now own a New Holland TC40D. My question is, is there any risk in mixing the hydraulic fluid that is left in the log splitter (Cub Cadet Fluid) cylinder with the hydraulic fluid that is in the NH? Any thoughts would be appreciated. BTW Its too late for me to turn back as I used the splitter before the thought crossed my mind.

The TC40 and the JD4500 would probably be a good comparison. I ended up with blue (40D) for the simple fact I got a better deal. I felt both tractors were very competant. If I could have got the 4500 with hydro (which they don't offer) who knows which I would have chosen. Even though I own Blue, there is something nostalgic about that JD green.

My 95 Cub Cadet had a mechanical hour meter which was driven by engine RPM, while my New Holland TC40D appears to be an actual clock that is independant of engine RPM. I guess it just depends upon how the manufacturer decided to track running time.

Kind of off the topic, but didn't Cub Cadet (MTD) buy the compact tractor line from Mitsubishi? Thought I heard that somewhere in the past. I know Cub's use a Mitsubishi Diesel engine on their tractors.

I recently built a 40x60 pole barn and was wanting to run power to it. I cuurently have a 200amp service for my house on a pole in the back yard. I was wanting to move the pole out front and and run two disonnects off from it. One for the house, and an additional 200amp to the barn. Is there an easy way to hook up two disconnects that feed through the same meter? Also, my house is currently 50 feet from the meter, if I move the pole to the front it wil be 175' from the meter. Will the line losses adversly affect my power bill, or will they be negligible? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Whew, that was a mouthful.

Thats sounds like a reasomable price, I believe I was quoted around the same price for one with r-4's. I believe it was 18,800 I was quoted.

Good points Art, as with any manufacturer they are going to set things up in such a way as to make their machine look like it performs better. Best way to figure it out is get on a machine set up the way you need it and go from there.

Well I don't have any good replacements to the current diesel or gas engines, but keep in mind tractors are in need of lots of torque. HP is nice, but its torque that gets the job done. HP is just a derivative of Torque and RPM. As a general Rule tractors dont rev very high so torque is much more important.

Hurricane, Good luck getting any help from MTD. I bought a CUB 7232 back in 95 when they were first inroduced. I had problem after problem with the underdesign linkage on the 72" belly mower. It broke an average of twice a month. Every part was design with static loading in mind and not the dynamic loading that occurs when mowing etc. They also paid very little attention to items like stress concentration factors at thread ends, holes through shafts etc. I probably spent over a $1000 in replacement linkage components in 5 yrs. I contacted CUB (MTD) several times and all they would say is there is no history of a problem with these parts. I know for a fact there is. My first trip to the parts counter I met a guy with the exact same broken pivot assembly. Oh yeah, if they still use that junk battery throw it out before it rusts your tractor into a pile of nothing. My 2C worth on CUB Cadet.
