You're right, the Monroe Tufline boxblades are very well made, and quite heavy. My father-in-law has one of theirs in the 6ft size, I expect his will last forever the way he uses it. I regularly see the cheaper offbrands selling new for approx. $275. I don't think these are as rugged and heavy duty as the M-T brand. Land Pride makes some boxblades which are very good quality, as well as the Bushog brand.

Great advice Wayne. That's why I stayed away from the grey's and bought green, for a few dollars more. Parts for my green can be had from anywhere in the states. If I need it, service is just a few miles from home. I am happy!!

Eric, can't answer any of your specific questions as to the value of those tractors but I did want to make a comment or two. If I were you, I would be asking myself what advantages will the TC18 provide me with over the 1210 that you currently own? If they are not significant enough to justify the extra money, then I would be inclined to stay with the older tractor. If the 1210 is giving you problems, then that is a good reason to consider new especially if the dealer gives great service. Sounds like your 1210 runs just fine, though. The TC18 obviously will give you some more bells and whistles, and shiny new sheet metal, but is that worth it? If either of those is enough to make you put up with your wife grumbling for spending X dollars on something you really might not need, then by all means go get yourself one!! Maybe it's just me, but I like to be able to justify buying something new (that costs more than a few hundred dollars) rather than buying it just because I want it. On the other hand, buying it will help keep the economy going!! Good luck!<br>

Vince, you've come to the right place for opinions!! We just love spending other folks money too! I think the first you need to ask yourself is do you have lots of spare time to spend on working your 5 acres, or do you want to be able to get the work done and then do some other things too? It sounds like you have big plans for it and that's great but the right equipment will get work done the most efficiently. The bigger garden tractors like the TORO can do almost the same work as compact diesel, it only takes them a while longer to do it. Likewise, a compact diesel can do almost the same work as a larger (say 36-50hp) tractor, but it takes them a bit longer too. Just keep in mind that what makes a tractor work effectively is power and weight! The more you have of both of those, the bigger you can increase the size of the implements to work faster. One drawback to using a smaller tractor is that you can overload/overwork if it is not heavy/powerful enough to do the job. The big advantage is price, but it may stay broke more if you overwork it. Some disadvantages to buying a larger compact tractor are price (of implements too), manuveurability, it's heavier, and a lot more trouble to move (compared to a garden tractor) around if needed to. The big advantage to getting a compact is that it opens you up to a huge array of implements and options such as backhoes, etc.. I would stay away from tractors that use non-standard 3pt implements. That limits availablity of those implements in the new and used market, and it limits your market if you decide to resale. <br> For your immediate needs of maintaining the meadows/fields and driveway I would definitely go with a compact diesel tractor of about 20-24hp. A tractor this size with a loader will do a heck of a lot of work and run any 3pt implement that is sized right for it. Doesn't sound like you really need four wheel drive on a level 5 acres UNLESS you have a heavy snowfall or really muddy/soft/sandy/places. If you decide later on to move up to a larger tractor, the compact will be very easy to resale. Perhaps you can find someone/friend that will let you

I really don't think that the position (angle) of the pto shaft has much affect on the ability of the tractor to deliver maximum torque to a 3pt implement. The u-joints on both ends of the pto shaft allow the lift to raise/lower at any pto speed. I think the limiting factor will be how much weight you can pull/lift from the 3pt lift with a given tractor. You definitely want the winch roller fairlead to be as low to the ground as you can get it while winching in a log at maximum speed, though. The obvious reason for this is that if the log hangs up, that should help avoid lifting the front of the tractor off the ground. I would think you want to design/build it such that the optimum working position is with the winch frame resting on the ground, or just above it. If it were me, I would only raise the winch to move the tractor from one place to another and not attempt to pull logs while the winch was raised much over a foot or so. But that's your call. BTW, what size cable are you planning to use? Will it have some sort of clutch built-in to it? How will you mount the spool relative to the pto shaft? Will it be offset to one side, or are you going to be able to center the spool so its center will be in line with the shaft?? What size trees do you expect to be able to winch up with it? Sorry for all the questions, but I like talking winches!! Good luck with it and post some pictures when you are done!<br><br>

I bought an '81 750 last February. It's a two wheel drive with gear trans, no loader, and had 973 hours on it at the time. The ad price was $5500 for the tractor, a four foot harrow, and a five foot bushog. I didn't want the five foot bushog so I made an offer of $4500 for the tractor and the harrow. The 650 has 18.5 engine hp, and 15 pto hp. The 750 has 21 engine hp, and 18.5 pto hp. These may not be exactly what the book says, but it's very close. At least, I am sure of the 750 as I own an '81 model. I don't know the exact figures for the 850 but I think it is about 24 engine hp, and has about 21 pto hp. Someone can correct me if I am off on this one.<br>Keith

But then, if you make mod's to a tractor's front end under warranty and have any problems whatsoever with the steering or frontend, the dealer is automatically going to blame the problem on the mod's. And the next thing is that JD will say you violated the warranty anyway, so they have no obligation to fix it. You can't win this one, at least while it is still under warranty!!<br>

Folks, I was just wondering if any of you have ever seen what kind of machine it takes to bale the pine straw that I see for sale at nurseries and home improvement centers such as Lowe's, etc. We've all seen the old balers used to bale hay in the rectangle bales. What kind of machine is used to bale pine straw? Anybody seen one? Who makes it? How big it is and how narrow a space will it fit into? How much does it cost? Does it run off pto? Or does it have its own power source to pull behind something else like an atv?? Thanks for any answers.<br>Keith

John, I currently have a 4 foot Landpride bushog (model 15-48) hanging off the back of my little JD 750. I was amazed at how well it can cut a level lawn, and the pastures. It cut just great with new blades, but even after dulling a bit it still cuts fairly good. In fact, it cuts as good my father-in-laws Toro or Ex-Mark finish mowers and looks just about as nice. Of course, the ground has been pretty hard lately due to no rain, so the ag tires have not been a problem. So, I think that if you consider getting a good four foot bushog, you can get just as good results as with a much more expensive finish cut mower IF you get your yard graded reasonably level. A five foot will not cut quite as nice since it won't be able to follow the yard contours as well. <br>Good luck....<br>Keith

hello friends,<br>about 5 months ago i purchased a new 4310 HST, from carver equipment company. it is a four wheel drive with a cab. i am running the R-4 type of tire and i use it primarily to cut my grass. (yes i have alot of grass also, i cut with an 8' rotary mower) while i enjoy all the nice features , such as the A/C, i cannot say i am pleased with the ride in genaral. my lawn is not completely level and there are some bumps but, this tractor of mine does not take them well. it is so bad, i've learned where i need to slow down, so i dont' wind up losing my lunch.<br>prior to owning this kubota i used a ford 1900 with a 6' mower that had turf tires and it was NOT a four wheel drive. i did not have any trouble of this kind before on the same lawn????<br>i have asked around about this problem and i was given a suggestion of putting water in the tires but, i can't see how that would soften the ride.<br>one thing i have noticed is. my problem is compounded somewhat by the HST. everytime i hit a bump, that the shock is NOT absorbed by the tractor very much and is transferrd to me. it is then transferred to my foot. this causes me to not have a consistent presure on the HST pedal. thus, i am causeing the tractor to jerk by not driving a constant speed. i have set the cruise control to avoid this but, that will only cure this part of a greater problem. a stiff ride.<br>am i the only person who is have this kind of experience? i would appreciate any suggestions you may have.<br>thank you,<br>keith wilder

Most definitely! I operate my little JD 750 on my hunt club's 700 acres of property, which we lease from paper companies. The land is rolling hill type terrain to start with. Then, add in the washouts from rain, deep ruts that the skidders leave behind, deep gullies, and it gets to be pretty rough to drive over. All we are trying to do is to keep the firebreaks and skidder trails open, and a few open, level areas that we plant food plots. I just feel much safer with it on, anyway.<br>Be safe!<br>Keith

Brian, a nearby JD dealer I spoke with also recommended to use the off-road diesel fuel. His mechanic said it helped to lubricate the diesel injector pump. <br>Where I get my off-road diesel, the fuel is dyed red and costs about $.71 cents a gallon. Another poster on this group indicated the color codes are as follows:<br>Clear Diesel = on road low sulfur<br>Red Diesel = off road low sulfur<br>Green Diesel = off road high sulfur<br>I would have thought that I should be getting the green dyed stuff, so I am little confused as you are.
