I just complete my 50hr service too on my TC40D, I know its not the same machine, but I haven't notice that on mine.

I found out why my belt broke. After purchasing a new belt and starting to install it, I noticed that the tensioner pulley seemed very wobbly. Upon inspection I found a broken weld on the Pin that acts as the pivot point for the tensioner lever. It appears that this weld was never fully finished at the factory. It looks as though it were only tacked in place. This is very disapointing for me because the mower is not yet a year old, and I have been very diligent in maintaining it properly. I have also never mowed in grass that is extrememly deep etc. I'm hoping this was just bad luck and not the norm for Woods products. Anyone else ever heard of this happening?

Here are some additional thoughts on the diesel fuel thread. "Gelled fuel" refers to wax particles in the fuel - at least in moderately cold climates. These will immediately clog the fuel filter and there is nothing you can do except warming the fuel (move the vehicle inside if possible). Changing filters will let the motor run - for a very short time - until the new filter clogs. Years ago, Volkswagen recommended mixing regular gasoline with the diesel in cold conditions. I believe that this makes the cylinders run "dry" so I have always used fuel conditioner in my trucks and tractors. One winter I pulled into a service station with the truck engine starving for fuel and added some kerosene to the tank. The motor smoothed out immediately (the return lines circulate a lot of fuel) as the kerosene "loosened up" the diesel fuel and it could get thru the filter. About ether - it will absolutely damage an engine with glow plugs. I've heard about people using it but they disconnected the glow plug relay before turning the engine over. If the ether hits the hot glow plug when the piston is coming up, it is like a bomb going off in the cylinder and can bend connecting rods and do major damage. One last thing - buy fuel where the truckers buy it. That means that the fuel turns over frequently and has not been sitting in a small tank for a long time. Also - never assume that the fuel is adjusted for winter conditions. That depends on what the distributor has and is why I have always used conditioner. This all pertains to the mountains of Western North Carolina where it can get very cold but nothing like Canada or the nouthern U.S.

Tom, if you don't find one at a decent price, try a loader from "Cad Plans". They are very easy to make, even if you are not able to weld you can still do all the gathering materials and cutting required, then have it welded for you. The plans are (IMHO, as an Engineer) very detailed and easy to follow even for an absolute newbie to metal-working. Give it a look. Best of luck.

I have a JD 4100. It appears as though there is some kind of government "standard" that manufacturers adhere to. Check your owners guide as they may have some information. Most tractor owners will tell you to go by your instincts. If it feels bad, don't do it!!. To be honest, the best thing to do is to "cruise" the message boards to glean as much information as possible. Jplan has been very informative for me. I'm a newbie when it comes to using tractors and spend time trying to understand what I need to do to operate and use my tractor safely. One, I like living!!! Two, I have a large investment in my equipment and want to make sure that it is used correctly and lasts as long a possible (being frugle is a good thing!!). Good luck, Terry

I have a 4400 hydro leaking hyd.fluid.It appears to be leaking on the joint between wheel assemble & transmission housing.The 72" mower deck has a stop on it that will cut the return line hose if not removed. Has anyone else had this problem?Bought this unit back in Sept.2000 w/47 backhoe 9"& 24"bucket/430 loader 61"hd bucket/R4's/72in mower deck.

The Kioti dealer in my area (Central IL.) just got out because no one was buying them. Price sounds OK, but beware, I heard parts are hard to find because dealers are dropping them.

I hate to be the spoiler in all this but here I go anyways. The 3pth, as with any hyd. cylinder, requires a valve in the circuit to direct fluid to & from it, to create the controlled motion we desire. If your 3pth is dropping without any input from you, this means that either the seals in the valve or cylinder are allowing the hydraulic fluid to escape instead of being trapped in the cylinder and holding up the load. Get it checked out.... Best of luck.

Yes, it is true that I had the standard safety procedures in mind (don't do anything with the tractor unless sitting in the seat) when I said 'climb on and off'. It also is true that many people, including myself, regularly violate the procedure--especially when swapping implements and greasing loaders. Even when the violation is an educated one and the risks are understood, it is still better not to. However, we all develop our own styles, and some stick closer to safety procedures than others. Anyway, this is a thread where everybody made good suggestions. I'm just half-heartedly sticking to a defense of my pry-bar. After all, I've had it for twenty years longer than the tractor. I suppose I do owe it some loyalty, and it does work well for my purposes. On the other hand, I can make a 'not very likely' case for climbing on to the tractor to make the loader adjustments. Whether I would climb on or not is another question.

My tractor is brand new and still has the factory oil in the engine. However, when it comes time to change I believe I am going to use the same oil that I purchase for my motorhome with Cummins diesel engine. It's called Valvoline Premium Blue 2000 15W-40 and it's a semi-synthetic available from Cummins dealers or most large oil jobbers. The main problem with full synthetics used in engines that can be dormant for long periods is the tendency to drain off the cylinder walls and lead to potential "dry starts". The mineral oil content of Premium Blue has good "wetting" properties and tends to cling to the cylinder walls for better protection at startup.

From the description, I guess the clutch still 'feels' normal, it just doesn't disengage. If there is little resistance in the pedal travel, then the linkage may have come apart. If the tractor has access to the bell housing, you might be able to see the linkage and operation of the throw-out bearing on the clutch-plate. If the linkage and throw-out bearing are OK, there may be excessive free-play at the top of pedal. Then, the clutch may not completely disengage when the pedal is depressed. However, if it's a two-stage clutch for a live PTO, then excessive free-play usually results in a PTO that won't engage or stop and doesn't affect the TX clutch. There should be a simple adjustment for clutch free-play.

Having a problem with my 3ph on a John Deere 1050. When moving round bales around 1100lbs, the 3ph will raise the bales fine and hold for about 5 sec. and then suddenly drop. If I get the tractors rpm up enough when starting to move it will usually hold and not drop, any suggestions why the sudden drop at lower rpm. No chatter or whining noise when lifting. One note, never had this problem until I installed a power steering kit to the tractor. Any suggestions, input, or thoughts would be appreciated.

Steve, it is possible that you did relieve pressure properly when you disconnected the loader. If the oil was cold when you disconnected the hoses and then the sun was shining on the hoses, heating them up, the oil expands enough to give you this problem. There is not much you can do to prevent this other than to manually relieve the pressure either the way you did it or to use a wrench and loosen the fittings. Either way , be extremely careful to protect yourself from getting hydraulic fluid injected through your skin. This can be a very serious injury. Also be careful of this if you develop a hydraulic leak in a hose or a steel line.Never use your hand to locate the source of a leak . Use a piece of cardboard to slide along the suspected leak area to find the leak. Most owners manuals contain warnings about this type of potential injury. Kenny
